When do you find out what company you are in?

Just genuinely curious about this one, as the title implies. I was also wondering how they "sort" plebes. I would imagine it is based off of performance during Plebe Summer or some other system whereby they sort you after they get a chance to see how you perform... Any thoughts? Hope this thread doesn't exist, but if it does please feel free to lock this one!

As always, thanks!

I don't know anything about the process by which plebes are placed in companies, but last year the assignments were sent out in mid June. Although some plebes reportedly found out the assignment via email, the majority received the news via snail mail.

Not sure how they place Plebes into companies to start with (guess is some computer program or its totally random), but you will remain in that company for the full year, not just Plebe Summer. After Plebe Year if they shot gun or scramble you is a different story, that is determined by the administration. But who you start I-Day with is who you will be your companymates for the full year.

2016 doesn't find out companies until we get there.

Source: several 2/c and 1/c mids

Also, the packet that was provided in the second BFE stated we won't find out our companies and platoons until I-day:thumbdown:

Out of curiosity, do reporting times ever correspond to company placement? If I'm reporting at 7:30, does that mean everyone else reporting at 7:30 is in the same company as me? Or is it random? Do we just meet up with our company later in Bancroft?

Report times are not all by company. Plebes will be delivered to their company areas in Bancroft throughout most of the day, as they finish their in-processing.

Company assignments are determined by factors such as gender, race, prior-E, NAPS, recruited athlete, home state, and international status - probably other factors as well (legacy? height? CFA test scores? SATs/ACTs?). The idea is not necessarily to homogenize platoons and companies because that's just not possible. Rather it's to give each platoon and company a broad representation of individuals. Lots of plebes have never been out of their home states, much less met someone from Alabama or Alaska or Guam or who's been in the Fleet for two years already.

My PTR states that I should be there at 7:30 too. Well, I'm looking forward to meeting some new folks regardless, but I was just curious to know if there was a "secret sorting process" that they used.

Across the 30 companies, an effort is made to evenly spread certain groups such as prior enlisted and other categories. Then again, it could be just a dart board...or The Sorting Hat.

Does anyone know how we'll be able to let people back home know? I'm just trying to figure out how to get people my address if we aren't getting our companies until I-Day. Are we going to be able to notify our parents that day? Will they be notified some other way? Or are they just going to have to wait for that first letter?

I was thinking the same thing....

Your folks get a letter in the mail and sometimes a second, generic letter, from the company officer.

d. mcknight,
If you are traveling alone to I-Day, there will be an opportunity after the Oath of Office for you to borrow a cell phone to make a call home, at which time you can convey your platoon and company (might not hurt to pass along your Alpha code too). I believe the Maryland Parents Club or some members of the Class of 66 Link in the Chain will be there near Stribling Walk to offer phones for those unaccompanied Plebes.
I mention the Alpha code because if any of your care packages include clothing (compression shorts, mostly), whoever is sending the package can put your Alpha in the waistband. Saves you the (precious) time of doing that once the package arrives.
Good luck!

Thanks for all of the great answers!I have the Wisconsin Naval Academy Parents Association meeting today, and should hopefully have some more answers that I'll post up.. I'm going to ask a lot of "dumb" questions, so please forgive me for some facepalm moments! :)

Let me know how the Wisconsin parent association thing goes, I'd love to make it but I'm way up here in the northwoods!

My son will be traveling alone. Another young man from South Dakota will be traveling alone as well. You probably already know this, but if you arrive on the 30th, a bus will take you to the Academy and you can stay in Bancroft Hall that night. You will need to provide your own meals, but at least you'll have a place to sleep.

There are plenty of kids every year who stay in Bancroft the night before. Usually they will head out to dinner together. Gives you a chance to meet people and gather your bearings some. Don't worry, you won't be alone.

Oh and there is a place on I day where the Alumni Assoc has cell phones for kids who come alone. They will hand you a cell to call home. They will also help take some pics in your new favorite uniform and send to family. Lots of families are generous and will volunteer also. If someone offers, accept it. You will want those photos down the road and it makes the family feel a little more connected and relaxed you made it.
