When do you find out what company you are in?

I could be wrong, but I thought DS did not know company assignment until IDay last year.

I was told by an insider its actually alot like harry potter. When they find out what house they are assigned to. Same as companies for USNA

Thank you for the feedback I didn't know about the cellphones. How does the stay at Bancroft hall the night before work?

Company assignments are determined by factors such as gender, race, prior-E, NAPS, recruited athlete, home state, and international status - probably other factors as well (legacy? height? CFA test scores? SATs/ACTs?). The idea is not necessarily to homogenize platoons and companies because that's just not possible. Rather it's to give each platoon and company a broad representation of individuals. Lots of plebes have never been out of their home states, much less met someone from Alabama or Alaska or Guam or who's been in the Fleet for two years already.

Are there really Mids from Alabama? Yikes

Hope no one gets Slytherin.

If you are unaccompanied on I-Day, when the ‘free time’ comes after the oath ceremony, you will have no problem finding the people literally waving cell phones in the air for you to call home or whomever you please. Just head to the center of Stribling. You will be well taken care of........they even give out free hugs if you want one! :)

Just genuinely curious about this one, as the title implies. I was also wondering how they "sort" plebes. I would imagine it is based off of performance during Plebe Summer or some other system whereby they sort you after they get a chance to see how you perform... Any thoughts? Hope this thread doesn't exist, but if it does please feel free to lock this one!

As always, thanks!

They sort plebes prior to I-Day so your performance has nothing to do with what company you will be put into. The Mids currently in the Brigade should be able to see who the incoming plebes in their companies are sometime in the summer. If you know a Mid, they can relay that information to you ahead of time. At least that is what happened in the past.

And how things change in a year! Last year we had to wait for snail mail. I'm liking the embracing of technology but I also liked those nice letters with the Naval Academy return address (once he had a BFE and they were no longer fearsome things!).

+1 Parent! DS took the initiative to bring in the mail because his buddy texted him to tell him he received his company #. His buddy wasn't clear if he got snail mail or email.

My DS is in 30th Company. Someone from USNA class of 2019 Facebook page messaged him and told him. Apparently some of the kids on that Facebook group has the list. DS is part of this closed group and can see who's in it. Oh lord...here comes the flood of messages asking for the company...lol.

How do you get into the group?

Your DS/DD has to request. No parents allowed. Just the current plebes. https://www.facebook.com/groups/670788733021160/
Word of caution-this is not an officially endorsed USNA group with vetting procedures in place. The upper class can infiltrate these plebe only groups. They like to "check out" the incoming plebes for "helpful" information. It's a lot like the Miranda warning says-anything you say can and will be used against you. In other words, may be a good place to get info but probably not a good place to "expose" any Achilles heel.

Agree with midmom, this happens every year. Its great to know ahead of time as you can get to know some folks on social media, but in the end it really doesn't provide all that huge of a benefit. You will get to know the Plebes in your squad the best during PS. You won't know the squads until you report unless an upperclassman doing detail divulges the info. Always be cautious what you say on social media regardless of closed group or not. Remember that each company has its own identity each year. Just because Company X has a reputation of being really hard one year, doesn't mean it will be the next year. Each class provides its own identity to a company. A company officer and SEL can also factor into this. So don't get so wrapped up in rumors of "I heard my company is the worst" type of rumors. Things can change very quickly from year to year, some for the better and some for the worse. Just go in with a positive attitude and in shape and you will be fine.
