When is A-day and PPW?

As the title implies, I'm wondering when both A day and PPW are because my mom wants to come to one of them and she's being asked to put her vacation down now. Does anyone know for the Class of 2021? Thanks

A day is August 19th, not sure about PPW.

The official calendar has not been released, but the Thayer Hotel has the tentative dates - check with them for Plebe Parent Weekend (which is March 2018) - but so far ahead, A-Day is the surer bet right now.

Is A day a good weekend for parents to come visit? Or should we wait for PPW?

Thayer Hotel said PPW will be on March 10, 2018.

If at all possible, DO NOT MISS ADAY. There are some good books out there that will help your mom know what to expect about the different events, etc...she might look into getting one.

Would it be wise for my family to book a room at the Thayer Hotel for A-Day or will I be so sick of being on post by the end of Beast that I will want to go spend time with them at an off-post hotel? Any and all help is appreciated.

A-day is a fantastic weekend for family and the cadet. Only complaint we had this year was that it was 189 degrees outside if my recollection is correct. I think I sweat of 40 pounds.

It is truely a great opportunity to spend time with your cadet and catch up on everything that happened at beast. You will have never missed your child more than during beast. As a great bonus, you get to hang with your cadet and he or she will be in whites over grey, which will make you pump out you chest with pride wherever you go. Enjoy!

I won't try to guess for your family, but give you comments on our experience.

The Thayer is inside the car gate, so we came at an off time from the airport and did not need to wait in long early morning lines. It is some distance away from the main part of post - a very long walk (3/4 mile, I would guess?) or a short shuttle. It was new to our then-new cadet, who had not made it to that part of post during Beast, and we did not spend time driving from Fishkill/Newburgh or waiting in line with him outside the gate. Our car was on post, so we were able to easily take him to the PX for the things he wanted for his room, and walk to dinner at a couple of places in Highland Falls just outside the gates. Meals were excellent, and staying there for R-Day - which I booked as soon as he got his appointment - got us a deal to stay there for PPW, Ring Weekend, and graduation. It was extremely helpful for graduation.

The downside: the cost. The rooms themselves are expensive, and have few of the "extras" that many other hotels have, and your dining choices are (i) drive elsewhere and deal with the line at the gate, (ii) walk into the limited choices in Highland Falls, or (iii) eat at the Thayer. And it will be new to your new cadet, but will still have the feel of being on post. To reserve rooms for graduation, I had to pay on R-Day. The cancellation policy was liberal, and I know a number of other families transferred reservations easily, but they still had $4000 of my money for four years.

The advantage of booking a room off post for A day weekend is that your cadet will have somewhere to go that is NOT WP. My cadet was happy to be somewhere else after having such an intense experience over the summer. We stayed at a place that was about 35 min away and when we had dinner at the local diner, we ran into a lot of WP cadets -even being that far from post.

Another advantage to the surrounding areas is space...we had a suite with plenty of space for our large group to sprawl out...I wish it were closer, but it wasn't that big of a deal. We also enjoyed the food options outside of HF (which are very limited).

Staying on post is for your benefit, not the Cadets. There are two hotel choices; the Thayer, which is very nice, but very expensive, and is only barely on base, so still a distance from the cadet area and other attractions, and the IHG Army hotel, which looks rough from the outside, but the rooms aren't bad (think old red roof inn quality). It is far less expensive, and has an outstanding location, and is very very convenient. It's near the cemetery. There is also another IHG Army hotel just outside the gate, very close to the Thayer.

If you have refined tastes, better stick with the Thayer. If you are happy with simple and functional, go with the IHG. They both book fast, so don't hesitate if it is a big weekend like A-day or a football weekend.

My 2020 appreciated being away from post in Fishkill, about 30 min drive north. There were some good restaurants and a Walmart to get stuff for his room.

My cadet wanted to get away from post too, and needed some shopping, so we took him to Newburg for a good meal. (FYI, there is a great old waterfront district in Newburg, with a good BBQ, a great pizza place and a seafood place, among others). But you have to bring the Cadet back regardless, so it's nice not having to go to Newburg or Fishkill, then back to WP late evening, then have to drive all the way back to Newburg or Fishkill. We have done it both ways more than once, and it much nicer being on post. Just saying.

Having said that, I will say both Newburg and Fishkill have plenty of decent places to stay.
