I have conflicting dates for the 3rd Board Deadline for NROTC. Would appreciate the exact date, please. Many thanks!

The 3rd board is December 12-16. I don't believe that there is a set date for application to be in, but you could miss the board if you cut it too close. DS submitted his last piece early October for the October 17-21 board but he believes that he didn't get boarded until November.

Thank you! I am still learning as we go through this process. It's a little difficult for me to understand that there is no set deadline, but I am grateful for your insight nonetheless. Would you mind me asking who is DS? Thanks again.

DS stands for Dear Son. Check out the "Acronym list" on the top of this page. You will see a lot of acronyms in the forum. :wiggle:

There are 2 key factors that drive whether or not an application package is submitted for a particular board.

Biggest one is that the application needs to be complete with all required signatures. And the forms need to be the current ones downloaded from the website. We have had a few submittal of the fitness assessment using old AFA sheets. They get rejected because the Navy does planks now and not crunches.

The other factor is how many packages the board can review and score in a single week. That varies depending on the board, but most times they are scoring packages up to 2100 each day. So if a lot packages come in all at once, they might get pushed to the next board.

They all get done though.

I'm concerned because DD's NROTC application won't get to December board, and could be among hundreds submitted later: this seems odd because her package was accepted as complete in June!

The saga starts January '22 when I contacted local recruiting; months later I'd heard nothing, so I reached out again. Finally DD was able to apply; she got everything done as quickly as possible. (SAT 1320, National Honor Society, several AP classes, Varsity Swim letter, CPO of Sea Cadet unit, volunteer swim coach, works a part-time job, etc.)
DD interviewed with 1st-choice college NROTC unit in June via Zoom; she thought it went well.

Heard nothing; portal kept saying application at Local. In September I contacted recruiter; he said being considered for ISR. (I researched what that is, and thanked him without further comment.)

In October, recruiter requested DD try to improve AFA scores, which she did somewhat (good swimmer, but run time isn't great). Recruiter then notified DD to interview with regional CO for ISR; did so in early October; DD thought it went well except CO said he had more students to interview.

Today Dec. 6, I asked DD to contact recruiter that Mom is concerned the application still is Local in portal; recruiter answered the ISRs won't be decided until end of next week.
So if DD doesn't get ISR, her application will miss the December board then be among hundreds of later applications in January (or even beyond)??!

If no ISR, the delay also means DD won't know if she has NROTC tuition IF she gets December acceptance as Early Decision at her 1st-choice school? (I maxed-out my credit card to fly cross-country with DD to tour that university in August, knowing NROTC is the only way DD can afford to attend there.) How does a parent deal with anxiety not knowing if student will get ISR, and might not even get regular board scholarship? What to do if offered Early Decision acceptance by an otherwise-unaffordable college?

How unusual is our local/regional recruit office to be so far behind others, as I see posts with ISRs awarded months ago, and boards already awarded scholarships in time to be useful for Early Decision process?

(Note: DD wisely has plans B, C & D to allow for any contingency, including a home-state university where she could begin NROTC without scholarship, if that's necessary route to commission and service.)

I’m curious if you live in VA?

I'm not sure what your daughter should do but Early Decision is binding.

No, another state. (And a funny thing is, my kid is way more confident than me about the process.)
If it makes you feel any better - we're experiencing similar so I'm guessing there's just a lot that factors into play and reasons why we may have to wait :) It sounds like she's an amazing candidate - I'm sure all will work out. All the best!

Early Decision is binding if the student's family can afford tuition/room & board, or if they're offered sufficient financial aid from various private/government sources; not binding if there's no way to pay.

Thank you, it's good to know that at least there's other parents waiting 🙂.
