I truly believe that when one door closes, another opens. My son is a senior and over the past 15 months has completed applications to USMA, USNA, USAFA, AFROTC and AROTC. West Point and serving in the Army had always been his first goal. He applied to the other branches so he could learn about them, their opportunities and because the process was so similar. As this long and grueling process progressed, he wrote a lot of essays, took the ACT 4 times and received a ton of support from his teachers and coaches. In December, he was so thrilled when he received his congressional nomination to West Point! In March, he learned he had won a 3 year AROTC scholarship! We set out to visit all 3 schools in that 30 day window so he could make the best choice while we waited to hear from West Point. He was on an overnight visit to one of the schools and received a 2 sentence email as they were heading out to ruck for PT that morning from RC congratulating him on improved ACT scores but that he was closing his USMA file. Needless to say, he had a lot of time to think about things on that ruck! That school ended up being his first choice and he accepted his scholarship there before the school had even sent out their acceptance letters.

Since that day, he was accepted to that school and we have learned this his AROTC scholarship was upgraded to a 4 year. We just came home from the accepted student celebration at this amazing engineering school where more than 20,000 kids applied to a freshman class of about 1650. His school is paying room and board and my son will be able to get this amazing education and commission as an officer without having to worry about money. What an amazing future he has! I also find it interesting that at each school he visited for ROTC, he spent time with a cadet who had also applied to West Point and did not receive an appointment. All of them had stated they thought at first about reapplying but are now so happy in their schools and ROTC battalions it was never really given a 2nd thought. What a roller coaster this past 15 months has been but my son now can't imagine spending the next 4 years anywhere else than what was at first probably his plan C!

I apologize for this long post but I just want to thank those long time contributors and moderators on this forum. When we visited USMA in 2017 they advised us to not use the advice here but I have found a wealth of knowledge, support and experience. I spent as much time in the ROTC forum as I did here so make sure you watch for advice from the ROO's that contribute there. For those parents and students just getting started, make sure your child completes files early. I don't remember how many essays my son wrote but he got them done over the summer, before football started in full swing. Make sure the files get complete enough to trigger DODMERB early. He started his exam in July and it still took about 6 weeks to get qualified. I am so thankful he is already DODMERB qualified as there are a lot of kids just now accepting ROTC scholarships that haven't even started that process. And once you have that service academy file complete, put just as much time into Plan B and C because they could end up being Plan A! Congrats and best of luck to the USMA Class of 2022 appointees and all of the students heading out to ROTC battalions this fall.

No need to apologize for the length of your post. I enjoyed reading it. My DD did end up getting an appointment to USMA but when we were done with her visit to her plan B school where she did her PMS interview, we were both so impressed that we agreed that it would be a terrific option. I would have been just as happy for her to go that school.

Good luck to your son! Perhaps he and my DD will end up serving together.

Thank you @KYparent ! Good luck to your DD as well! This sure is an exciting time in their lives!

Congratulations to your DS! Did he apply for an AROTC scholarship his junior year of high school or his senior year?

I'd like to finish the other part of the quote, the part that isn't as well known:

"When one door closes, another door opens, but we so often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door, that we do not see the ones which open for us"

:)
Thank you! :)

He started his application the summer before his senior year. He did th fitness test during the summer and his interview once the closest ROTC batallion started back up for the new school year in September of his senior year.

sdsmom,

Great post, congratulations to your son on his scholarship, would also like to commend him on how he went through the process, looking at all plans A, B. and C with an open mind, sounds like he has a great head on his shoulders and will do very well in both school and ROTC.

When we visited USMA in 2017 they advised us to not use the advice here

I have to ask, did those at the USMA really say not to use advice from this board.

Best of luck to your son.

Thank you jcleppe!

We attended a parent information session at the academy while my son was spending the day with a cadet in 2017. The RC running the session said to be very cautious with information found on the forums and that they don’t recommend the forums as a reliable source of information. He even had a red line through the forums on his slide. I remember it well because another parent and I looked st each other and smiled because we had been talking about all of the useful information found here. I am sure they are wanting to make sure you use the admissions site and the instructions from your RC as the main source of information.

While there is useful information to be had here for sure, there's also quite a bit of information that just isn't accurate. Not a slam to this site at all. This is a great site for gaining insight on others experience. The key is for official information that best comes from the Academy itself. And to make sure that information shared on this site is taken with a grain of salt.

I find that almost humorous that information comes from the Academy itself, as we have heard nothing from the academy other than LOE, Qualfied letter and then nothing for almost 3 months. No communication from RC nothing to tell DS if a competitive candidate or not... so let me just say for the record the information we have received from this forum has been more than just a grain of salt. It is reassurance that when you have not received the TWE or the BFE you can continue to wait. It has been positive feedback, encouragement and similar people in the same state of waiting. It has been informative on what things like AOG, USMAPS, and and what prep schools are out there. We have received NONE of that from the academy. If I had to wait for the academy to answer our questions, we would have moved on to ATOTC long before now.

This post is phenomenal. I was dead set on USMA or USNA and like your DS, won a 3 year AROTC scholarship which eventually I found was upgraded to a 4 year. I also found out this morning that I won a 4 Year NROTC scholarship too. Sometimes life throws us curveballs, but we must adapt and overcome! Congrats to your DS, best of luck to him!

Like @sdsmom, my DS began the journey pursuing a service academy appointment and I found this little forum to be an extremely helpful resource.

Fast Forward to now, and my DS will commission as an Army Officer (also through an AROTC scholarship) in May of 2019. Back in 2014, I found the forum so helpful that I thought "giving back" by answering a few questions would be a way of paying it forward.

3000 posts later, here I am.

I hope @sdsmom, you find the time to continue to share your son's experiences as well.!

Congratulations to your DS!

We just found out tonight, only because my DS contactacted his FFR, that he didn’t get in. He does have a great Plan B, but it is so hard not to be disappointed. Thank you for your words,

So sorry to hear, maybe an AOG or prep will be offered. If not you can self prep or rotc at one of the great options available. Never give up on your dream. My DD got her twe last year in April, gave up her rotc scholarship and went to self prep at NWP. Now she is on her way to West Point...dreams do come true!

Ahh many great posts here tonight. This is great. So glad your sons and daughters found their paths. Your children, mom and dad all deserve medals! Probably the most challenging journey we all have taken during the last 6 years. Glad to know our fine young men and women will be working together in the Army Navy Marines Air Force Coast Guard and the Merchant Marine. Bon chance tout le monde!
