When should you transfer your ROTC scholarship?

My DS is trying to get all his ducks in a row so to speak and be sure his Plans A, B and C are all in place. As such, his first choice is an appointment to WP (he is currently 3Q'd with a nomination) but his backup plan is to attend college on an ROTC scholarship. He has currently accepted both Navy and Army ROTC scholarships. The NROTC is placed at a school he will hear from at the end of January. The AROTC was placed at his biggest reach school where he just learned he has been deferred. He then got news that he was accepted to another reach school (which he actually prefers to the school he has been deferred at).My question is at what point should he initiate the process of transferring a scholarship and how long does the process take? Can he wait to see if he gets into the reach school where the AROTC is currently placed (which would mean waiting until the end of March) or would he risk not being able to have it placed at the school he was just admitted to?

There is never anything that is guaranteed. Also, the process seems to change from year to year, although I may be getting my ROTC programs confused. Some year you have to wait until April. Recently you could start the process right away. Who knows what they are doing now? I would suggest reaching out to Cadet Command regarding the current process although itr should be spelled out in any letter you receive about being warded a scholarship.

I don't think anyone can advise you on the right course of action for your son, but I certainly wouldn't take any action until end of January, especially if he prefers Navy. I don't think waiting until March is out of the question. A lot of kids don't know about college acceptances until then. If the school where he was accepted is really his first choice at this point then I would try to start the process now, especially if he's not going NROTC.

I do know they will do everything they can to ensure your son can use his scholarship somewhere. Nice to have such issues to sort through. There are worse problems in life, as I'm sure you know.
