Where Are They Now?

@sheriff3 ,

39 years and 50 weeks ago I was packing my bags for Poland to attend my wedding. At that time, there were 500,000 Soviet troops the DDR and about 150,000 in Czechoslovakia. (They didn't need many in Poland since it was surrounded on all sides.) Not only are those troops gone, but those countries no longer exist and the remnants, including Poland, are now in NATO. Mrs. cb7893 and I were reconciled to knowing that it would be pain in the a$$--visa's, mandatory currency exchange, etc.-- to have our respective families on either side of the Iron Curtain. No one could have predicted today's geopolitical landscape in Central Europe.

When/If our DS completes his current training and quals his next duty station will be Stuttgart. Mrs. cb7893 dreams of the day that OUR DS goes to Poland in an official capacity. I'm sure she'll insist on being there and find some way to embarrass him.

Best of luck to your son and Na Zdrowie!

p.s. If you imbibe, have him bring you a bottle of Zubrowka.

So, son called us today to say that last week his BOLC class was informed in writing that unless they apply to post out, all will stay at Ft. Gordon and that, oh yeah, he bought a house on Tuesday and will close on it June 30th. Members of his cohort started buying houses after the new year, but he held out due to the slim possibility that he could be sent to Ft. Meade. Unbelievable. The kid is 23 and the house and property are beautiful and brand new. It’s amazing what $$ will buy in GA. I guess that means we are truly superfluous and irrelevant now. Heading for the porch rocker...

That sounds great. Augusta isn't the greatest, but it is the home of James Brown and the ocean isn't too far away. He can get tix for the Masters, but don't even think about scalping the them. Augusta National Security is second to none.

My DS was there for SBOLC. Is your DS Cyber or Signal?

What's amazing is what they get for rent for during Masters Week. He'll just need to figure out where to crash. I'm sure he'll get the full story. Dollars to donuts says the weekly is more than 1x the monthly mortgage payment.

He’s Cyber. He loves the area (hunting is fantastic) and wouldn’t think of posting out. Has no idea what the Masters is. The crazy thing is that the mortgage+taxes+HOA is only $177 above his BAH. He got a VA loan so, in effect, the government gave him the money to buy the house and is paying back the bulk of it. Nice racket.

I spent 3 weeks a year in Augusta for the masters for many years.
My clients typically paid $5,000 a week for the modest two bedroom house that I shared with a colleague.
We barely even slept there. leaving at 6am and returning after midnight during the actual tournament week.
The record however was when the US Open was at Shinnecock, in The Hamptons. There a 2 bedroom went for $15,000 per week.

SIL is still stuck in deployment. Rumor has it that they may be redeployed early June. Has missed the first steps and first words but grandson can say Da Da on Facetime. Glad I was single when deployed. Don't think I could take it.

I was last in East Germany in 1983 when I was a student at Bayreuth, took a bus to Berlin, and walked over to East Berlin.
Flash forward to December 2018 and I flew into Leipzig as an air crew member for a cargo airline. I couldn't believe the difference. Billboards, Christmas ornaments, Weihnachtsmarkt. I actually saw an add at the hotel for tours in a Trabant.
The sad part was when I toured the Stasi museum in Leipzig. I think the last execution of a "spy" there was in 1988.

Checkpoint Charlie was the old crossing. Seen in many movies.

Stumbled upon this very inspiring thread, and thought I'd post to "bump" it up and maybe revive some engagement. My DS is just in the beginning of his journey - recently TWE'd from USNA, looking forward to attending Norwich in the Fall. So, I have no info to share here, but I do love a good ending. Hoping to hear from more recent grads who are in their early years of active duty. Your stories are inspiring to those who've been dealt a blow of rejection.

I don't think I've ever seen this post.

DS commissioned via NROTC Spring 2021. Service assignment is SWO(N). After BDOC and and OOD Phase 1, he went to a DDG forward deployed in Japan in fall 2021. He is currently underway somewhere where tensions are high. He is working to prepare for his final two qualifications for his SWO pin. He just received his orders to report to OOD Phase 2, then Nuclear Power school this summer. By the time he leaves, he will have been underway more than he has been ashore. He has had an excellent experience so far, even with all the cancelled port visits. He has had two different division officer assignments and had great Chiefs, LPOs and Department Heads in both. He has explored the country during his time ashore. And he is now sporting a glorious (?) Navy mustache 🤣. I have been fortunate enough to visit him twice (once with DW) and even to go on a Family Day cruise with him. Nine days until promotion to O-2.

To anyone with a DS/DD going SWO, they do have access to ship email while underway. Sending pictures, other than small images seems to be an issue. And be prepares to wait several days sometime before they reply. They are very busy underway, with their Division duties, getting qualified, standing watch, etc. DS says he doesn't get a lot of sleep while underway, but it is the best sleep of his life.

Our USMA/Cyber son is just finishing up his captain’s course, getting married in June, and moving from Ft. Gordon, GA to Ft. Meade, MD in August to a new unit he is very excited about. Of course he can’t tell us why or what he’ll be doing. What else is new?

They do grow up and move on. USMA seems so far in the rearview mirror.

Ft. Meade is just up the road from Annapolis. Come visit and do Naptown things, such as eating your way through thr Amish Market, strolling DTA (downtown Annapolis), enjoying waterfront cocktails at sunset, attending A-N events on the Yard wearing vintage USMA swag.

He could also sponsor USNA plebes. It’s quite a joint family of sponsors, and I think it’s good exposure to other services.

There is base housing inside and outside the gate at Ft. Meade, but there is also housing available to military in the area at the Naval Academy complex. Not on the Yard itself, that’s reserved for USNA staff, but at the Naval Support Activity across the Severn River from USNA.

My son commissioned from AFrotc (Purdue) in 2018 and went to UPT in Enid (America) OK for flight training. After a year he got his wings and was sent to Barksdale (Shreveport LA) to learn how to fly his plane. Did that for almost a year and was later stationed in Minot (Why not Minot) ND. Since then, he spend a month in S. Korea for American-Korea military exercises (not pilot-related), spent a month in the UK last year with his squadron and just came back from Spain after spending a month there with his squadron. He is currently a Captain in the AF.

VGEP MA GTown followed by 1.4 deployments as a FIWO out of ONI. Orders to JSOC 7/23.
"I am living the dream Daddy"

And thats all I'm allowed to know bout that

So, based on info in another thread, it sounds like DS got lucky. Commissioned 04/30/2021 so just promoted to O-2. Didn’t have to wait for USNA commissioning date. He just emailed the other day that he completed OOD and now just has Maritime warfare board before going to his SWO boards.

I'm curious after reading through this. How often are most troops employed? (I'm specifically curious about Army officers)
Would a field like Cyber mean little to no deployment, or are Cyber officers often sent overseas?
