Where to retire?

Been in Scottsdale, AZ for almost 25 years. The summers are just brutal and we just need a place to escape to for the summer months in a few years once the kids are grown and flown.

Same here (Scottsdale 16 years, SE valley 7 years). We bought a cabin in a lakes region in Maine last April and enjoyed an amazing cool summer and brilliant fall. We left just before Thanksgiving. It's the best of both worlds and no more brutal temps for us.

My BFF and her DH want to retire next summer in Colorado or New Mexico. They want to be within 1 hour of a major airport. Does anyone know of any great little quaint towns they could consider in their search? Neither of them are retired military. Both of her elderly parents are in Texas so she wants to be closer to them but away from the Texas heat 🥵
Ruidoso is beautiful. A friend just considered Cloudcroft, NM as well, but opted for Greer, AZ instead.

Cloudcroft, NM is also home to Mad Jack’s Mountaintop BBQ. In my opinion, one of the best there is. Mad Jack still makes monthly trips to his hometown of Lockhart, TX to get a trailer load of split post oak that he uses in his smokers. It’s incredible.
