Which one is harder to attain, a nomination or an appointment? i am hearing from some that thousands upon thousands of candidates recieve nominations-that it is nothing more than a pre-requisite, and that the real challenge is getting the appointment. Others, on the other hand, seem to suggest that once i have the nomination i have a very good chance at getting appointed. they say that only 4000 (some even insist 2000) candidates get nominations and around 1600 get appointments, which means i have a great chance at appointment. Which one is it? thanks for your help.

The appointment is harder to get than the nomination. If it was the other way I think that there'd be something wrong with admissions quality.

maybe i should rephrase my question. what i am trying to ask is how easy is it to get a nomination once i have an appointment? are the chances still very slim (maybe there are thousands of candidates with nominations), or are they very good (maybe only 4000 with nominations and 1600 get appointed)? thanks

Maybe you should rephrase it one more time.

(I think you have it backwards. The nom comes BEFORE the appointment.)

The Class of 2011 stats show that qualified candidates with a nomination have an 80% chance of getting an appointment.

(2007 qualified candidates / 1600 appointment offers).

Do you mean like a conditional appt?

I guess it'd really depend on where you were from (how many kids are applying for a nom), but it seems logical that if the Academy deemed you worthy, your MOC would too.

As I alluded to in your thread in the USNA forum, I think you should be less concerned with "how difficult" things will be and, rather, concentrate on making sure that your qualifications are the best you can put forward. The rest, unfortunately, has too much of a chance factor to be measurable in any substantial way.

Best of luck.
