Hello,

I'm taking Dual Enrollment classes at my local community college to fill in some courses that is recommended to take for the Air Force Academy that my school doesn't offer. Since my school also doesn't have any sports team, my counselor suggested that I should take a physical course there too.

I was really excited to enroll in the Tennis class, but when I checked again today, I saw that it was no longer being offered. However, there are other physical courses available, the two of which are asynchronous: Jogging and Self-Def
ense. Another option is Weight-Lifting, which is in-person, but I'll miss the first week since I'll be attending NASS. If Weight-Lifting is the most recommended one, I can try talking to the coach to see if there's anything I can do.

But yeah, I'm stuck on which physical course to take. Any help or comment is appreciated. Thank you!

Do you take Gym classes at your HS? I don't think that taking phys ed classes at CC will help you in particular... I would think that something that gets/keeps you in shape is what you want ...e.g., Jogging.

I sort of agree with the prior post. Paying for a phys Ed course may not gain you anything. Can you join a club or intramural sport? Team based?

Anything that helps you prepare to max out the CFA? Cross country?

Of the choices you listed I would say self defense. The military trains their people in self defense. It’s always a good skill to have. You work in pairs and teams to train.

I agree with Jetbill. Find a team sport. I don't think a class matters. I suggest to my students to find a club sport, e.g., Ultimate Frisbee, Softball, Volleyball, Team Handball, etc. Also, as noted by Heatherg21, prepare for and do well on the CFA. Many students find Jiu Jitsu, Taekwondo, or other martial arts to be an easy sport to add to their schedule. Many small studio support this kind of training and offer flexible schedules to allow you to participate when you can. Best of luck with your preparations!

I can speak to martial arts. DS didn’t play high school sports but he did a decade of TKD and earned his 3rd degree black belt. Black belts teach so that gave him years of leadership, lesson plans, real world leadership experience, dealing with pushy parents, making adjustments on a case by case basis for kids with special needs and circumstances. Great essay and interview material but at the end of the day, excellent life experiences with an opportunity to pay it forward.

Oh yes, I do have experience with Taekwondo since I was six but unfortunately had to stop due to COVID. Now, I might go back to practicing martial arts again, fun memories! I was leaning into taking the Self-Defense class because of it but maybe I'll have a more flexible schedule if I just go back. Thank you!

Athletics. Academics. Leadership. Those are the three areas that USAFA looks at. The athletics piece often leads into the leadership piece. You also need to pass the CFA (cadet fitness assessment). Have you been practicing? Since you're not involved in a sport, you should be running, doing pull-ups, push-ups, etc now. If you're a junior, not sure there are any team sports you could join that will make a difference. If you're a sophomore or younger, find a club sport and excel. As far as taking a class, maybe, if it helps you prepare for the CFA, but it will do nothing as far as counting as athletics. Taekwondo seems like an automatic must-do, you can build on your previous experience. Good luck.

Do you need the gym credit as a graduation requirement? It is unusual to pay college dual enroll for gym. What are the other private options for team sports or can you organize a team option yourself.

I like this last option in particular. Organizing a team option, would be a strong demonstration of leadership. Good call Osprey123 !
