Who is the BEST Rock group of our generation?

I feel like this should also get broken into type of rock. Alternative versus classical, I have very different opinions for who is the best

The Who versus Zeppelin is right there with Mantle versus Mays or Mustang v Corvette in basic throwdown discussion topics. (I go Zep, Mays and Mustang, for those scoring at home.)

As far as my generation goes, I have to tip my hat to The Clash, with U2 taking over in their turn.

Such a tough decision.... As a music major (trumpet), I love Baroque more than anything else. But that ain't Rock...

But as a teen of the 80's, I'll take a tie between AC/DC and Judas Priest...

But then again, there's The Grateful Dead, who transcends all generations...

Liking your comment because you mentioned the Dead.

(The late, great) Tom Petty and his Heartbreakers. Brilliance, longevity, consistency.

Followed by the Pretenders -- owners of arguably the best debut album ever.

Back in the mid-'80s, I saw Petty on his "Southern Accents" tour and the Pretenders on their "Learning to Crawl" tour. To this day, the two very best concerts I've ever attended.

No contest: Lynyrd Skynyrd. Had they not been tragically decimated in the plane crash, they would have gone down as the greatest of all time.

Even my oldest (a musician), who disagrees with everything I say, has agreed they wrote possibly the top 2 rock songs (albeit, Southern rock) of all time.

Dating myself as well but The Who and Led Zeppelin were my bands... would have to throw Rush in there as well. As I tell my sons, rock died for the most part in the 80s with the exception of AC/DC and U2. Revived again with Nirvana and Pearl Jam in the 90s. As I’ve gotten older I have developed a great appreciation for Springsteen and his body of work.

Okay "Freebird" and what's the other?

Side story about finally coming to grips with getting old. 10 years or so ago went to get my first colonoscopy. As I pulled into the parking space Freebird came on my satellite radio. I sat in the car for the entire song recalling hot summer afternoons watersking on the Cumberland River, cut off blue jeans, no sunscreen, long neck Budweisers, going for catfish and thinking it doesn't get any better than this. I was right.

Sweet Home Alabama, of course.

1. Queen. There will never be another Freddie Mercury. Ever. And that is DR. Brian May. He earned a PhD in astrophysics and was the head of a Liverpool university.
I never considered Queen one of the best until I saw the movie Bohemian Rhapsody. Freddie Mercury was one of kind. Of course, I am also a big Highlander fan.
