Who receives a CVW invitation?

I am a post-high school reapplicant who had received an invitation to CVW. Last year, I was supposed to go to NASS however, that was canceled due to COVID. I hadn't received any CVW invitations last year and I imagine that is also due to COVID. As stated previously, I was sent an invitation this year. Does this invitation mean anything? Is this a good sign? I had read conflicting information on whether this actually has any significance (I read on one forum that it doesn't really mean anything and on another that it is a good sign).

Candidates typically want to read "signs" throughout the process and interpret them as "good". It's telling that they never seem to interpret anything as "bad". ;)

With that said, no - the CVW invite doesn't mean that you have a better chance than anyone else. It's a college visit.

What it really affords you is a chance to go there and experience The Yard from the perspective of a Plebe. Most who do a CVW come back with a renewed fervor for everything USNA and it really cements their resolve to end up there. Some however, will come back and say "Nope! That's not for me!"

That is what a CVW is for, especially if you're "on the fence" about USMA, or USNA, or USAFA, or somewhere else.

It is typically a check-in on Thursday afternoon thing. You get paired up with a Plebe and stay with them in Bancroft Hall Thursday and Friday nights. You attend classes with them on Friday and get an up-close view of what a day-in-the-life is like for a Plebe. On Saturday morning they will have you out by 0900 and you will return home.

If you can do it, I think that you would be glad you did.

There isn’t a downside, imo, other than potentially airfare. You won’t be evaluated or anything like that. You don’t get points for attending. You also don’t get docked for not attending.

You get to “try on” UNSA as a Mid for a few days. Exactly as THParent said.

In our situation, our oldest attended a vist. Our youngest didn’t, as he already had the exposure he needed to make his decisions.

Yes, it's a good sign. It means that on paper you are probably competitive. The down side is that it means very little for admission. If it is not a challenge financial or otherwise, I would for sure take the CVW if you can.

My DD received multiple invitations, even when she was a sophomore. We have no idea why. She ultimately attended February 2020...right before the world stopped...

Daughter received a LOA but never a CVW invite. Her BGO got one for her. She was amused at how many Midshipmen just dropped into her Plebe's room during her CVW there.;)

I received a text message from someone at USNA last week, saying that would reach out to me "early" next week, which I was assuming either yesterday, or today.

I've not received any word yet from them, and I am yet scheduled for a CVW (October 7 - 8), this is literally next week. Should I wait like another day, or should I reach out to someone again?

I don't want to leave the plane booking, etc, all for the last minute.

My DD didn't get he info until a few days before she went....

You (or mom/dad), imo, should book a flight ASAP to avoid the super high fares. May be too late for that already. But book a refundable/changeable option that is the ‘best bet’. Depending on where you are traveling from, either arriving the day before or early day of. There are posters here that have already attended, and each CVW is run the same way. So you can make your travel plans accordingly. ALWAYS CHANGEABLE. Don’t know your familiarity with booking travel, but SW is super friendly to BWI. AND ALWAYS CHANGEABLE.

Honestly, most airlines are allowing no fee changes, are least through December, bc of Covid. But read the fine print about that.

Booking flights is another skill that’s necessary imo. And adding the flexibility piece to its, is super important for Military travel.

Thank you for your concern, matter of fact, early this morning, I received a call from the USNA Admissions, they collected my information, and said they would have my itinerary/flights booked, and they would email me, by the end of the day today!

That’s great. Didn’t realize they were funding your trip, which changes my response entirely!! No need for you to book flights!!

They must have heard you inquiring here, and you woke up to your itinerary. Have a fantastic time!

Do you think this will change your mind about SMP/Army/The Citadel, or are you exploring all options to rule choices in or out in your own mind?
I mean although I'm committed to the Citadel and I plan to pay my deposit within the next month. I am still applying to USNA, but I have no doubt that I won't get an appointment. It's just a attempt. I'm still planning on doing SMP with the Army at the Citadel, just debating over Reserves/NG right now

Don't self eliminate. You got this.

@MichaelT2022 there is simply no way to know who admissions will appoint. It’s the whole person. It’s the competition on your slate. It’s a geographic representation. It’s what others do (ie if you are number 2, and number 1 passes). It’s what others do. It’s so much MORE than what YOU can know.

So…it’s not a NO until it is. At this point you are in the running. And it’s AWESOME that you have tended thoughtfully to other plans.

Don’t count yourself out.

Keep your options open. Tying yourself to an institution before you have really even started your senior year does not help you at all. There are horror stories every year of people who are tied to an institution and are trying to get out of it to attend a service academy.

.
Also … if NAVY really wants you … the whole person … and if they think that you can use another year of preparation … you might get an Offer to attend NAPS.

NAPS is not easy …. The place kicked our daughter in the a$$.
