Who throws a shoe??

HAHA! this is hilarious I saw it last night. Thank goodness it wasnt a shoe bomb the SS was so slow getting to President Bush

yeah definitly!! i was talking with someone about that cause if it was a deadly weapon bush'd be DEAD! if you watch it again the SS agents come out of like a broom closet next to bush 3 seconds too late lol

Throwing your shoe is a great insult in the middle eastern culture.

Too bad they don't know we find it humorous.

I wonder what was discussed with the Secret Service after the incident. I would have liked to seen a faster reaction....maybe before that second shoe.

President Bush did a great job dodging it.

I'm betting my bottom dollar (which in this economy is fast approaching :frown:) that there are a few SS agents just a tad embarrassed and getting the Mother of All Harrassment sessions from their colleques; a few SS agents higher than them looking at each other and raising their eyebrows in a Mr. Smith-from-the-Matrix kind of way, thinking "bad time to be fired, with the economy in the tubes and all"; and a few more SS agents even higher than THEM sitting down as we speak going over every contingency imaginable for every situation where somebody (or something) might throw something at the POTUS ("OK, the next time the President goes to the zoo, I want three agents between the Pres and the Monkey cage!")

I would have liked to see an agent take one for the President in this situation, however. The citation for bravery would have been CLASSIC!

"Agent XXXXX, with no regard for his personal well-being while displaying the highest level of bravery, bodly stepped in front of the projectiles and instinctlively and unselfishly put himself in harms way from a pair of size 10 Leather Oxfords, with Dr. Scholl's insoles, in order to protect the President. This courageous act, from which Agent XXXXX suffered a slight laceration from a hard-leather sole, and the humilation of 4 million hits on an embarrassing You-Tube video, stands as a proud testament to the sacrifices and dedication typical of all his fellow agents, and is a great credit to himself and the Entire Secret Service Community"

Bullet. That was easily the funniest thing I've read in a while :yllol:

We laugh, but this is actually how the world sees us and our president. It should make you sad, not full of laughter.

AFA2013,

As an American citizen, do I care if the rest of the World feels a little hatred and anger towards us? Sure, it hurst my feelings a little that my country and my President was disrespected. We americans have this great Hollywood image of ourselves as the hero in the white ten-gallon hat, riding in on a shiny steed, six-shooters blazing away and dealing justice 6 shots at a time to those evil ones who would do others harm. To realize that quite a few of them there townfolk think WE'RE the ones in the black hats, with black bandanas over the lower half of our faces, kind of stings. No one sees themsleves as the guy wearing the "black hat". We're America, we INVENTED Hollywood, we're the star of this here Western...

But as an officer (at least formerly) in the US military, I also realize it really doesn't matter a hill of beans what our global image is. For the most part, and from the people and places I've been to, America is still seen as the good guy -- especially when our Armed Forces are the ones putting themselves in danger and at risk in order to keep the world safe. They may not agree with our political agendas, and they may even get a little angry when our military easily defeats someone from a similar culture as theirs, but they are the first to scream for help from us when it is needed, and the first to shake our hands and thank us when we arrive.

As a future officer, you let those folks in ranks waaaaaaay above yours worry about our global image. We're just there to clean up the mess, whatever that may be. And to keep the world safe, whenever and whomever calls.

And when you run into those who sneer at you and call you ruthless invaders of innocent countries, you smile at them, and politely explain the facts. Never before in human history has one country's military been so overwhelmingly strong in power and capability and they have not EXPANDED their borders through conquest, or just taken whatever they wanted. You can be proud that you're joining history's first example of a military strength that is used for protection and benefit of ALL (at least, we try to be that way)

We ain't the Romans, or the Mongols, or the Aztecs, or the Persains, or the British, or the Germans. We're AMERICANS, and yes, we do wear the white hats....

Oh, and by the way, I would have LOOOVED if President Bush, after ducking form the second shoe, said in his best Austin Powers imitation: "I mean really, who throws a shoe? Honestly, you fight like a girl!" :shake:

You will quickly learn what opinions should matter to you serving, and what opinions don't. I don't consider the actions of one man who had over 100,000 fellow Iraqi's gassed as a great indication of things.

Plenty of people will cry; all while receiving U.S. aid. Am I sad? No.

No, never mind, I don't think you understand me. And no, I don't believe in leaving global and other concerns to those in ranks wayyy above us because if everyone were to do that we'd be surrendering many of the very rights that, as future/present/past men/women in the armed forces, will/are/were trying to protect, and letting this country turn into a totalitarian regime.

I don't feel like getting into a political discussion cause I'll be quickly outnumbered and attacked. I was just saying that maybe we should look at how people feel toward our beloved/hated/whatever president, because although we may see ourselves as those with "white hats"- others don't. We have to look past our egotism, and see the big picture.

If a tree falls in a forest, but there's nobody else to hear it, does it make a sound?

Don't forget that the US also asks other countries for help:wink:

Don't get me wrong,
I love this country...
we're just not exactly where we need to be

Don't get me wrong, but if you think you're entering a U.S. military who values the concerns of the most junior officers on how our military and country is run, in the international arena...you will be sorely mistaken. You will soon learn how many of those rights are surrendered while serving.

If you could direct me to a President the world loved, I would appreciate it.

The job of the President is to keep the country strong. Does the rest of the world want a strong U.S.? Do you want a strong Russia or China? Do you like Putin? Do you think they care?

Not surrendering them as a "junior officer" (which I am not), I meant surrendering them as a civilian. Which you can't possibly say that it's correct...

Who's talking about loving a president on a global scale? I'm talking about respecting.

There is no way anybody's insulting our president to divide our nation. His term's near being over and he has the lowest approval ratings ever.

So I guess I, sort of, understand where you're coming from if I was in the military. But I'm not, not yet, so we have two different views.

throwing of the shoe was a sign of disrespect for GW, wasnt really meant to hit him and hurt him... it's an Arab thing...

When you take the oath as an officer of the US military your personal views on politics really do not matter...

I do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God.

by the way... there will alway be people and countries that dont like us (the USA)...it really doesnt have anything to do with our president.
And do you really think people will like us more now??
