I was impressed with the Commandant, very professional and fantastic speaker! I was actually moved by his briefing!

It was a great day and the weather held out.

R-day last friday...

I was not able to be there but I have seen pics and was able to pic out my son in a few of them in the background. Was awesome. Are you part of the usmaps email list? if not go to the usmaps site, find usmpas parent net on the side bar and join. if you have pictures from r-day that you would not mind sharing with the rest of us it is greatly appreciated. :)

I am part of the list and saw the pictures.

LOL TPG!
I know, a lot to be desired but...the West Point Cadet Cadre on the left end and one kid look like they know what they are doing, he'd better! I gave him all the USMC formation training I could! lol

BTW, I think you know which one is my son so I won't mention his position but, did you notice that over 7 foot tall cadet candidate on the left next to the cadre? The rest of those kids are all over 6' tall and look like shrimps next to him! Army is going to have on heck of a Center in the Class of 2014!

Yes I did see him. Honestly, the old DI came out in me and I thought I would have called him "My Jolly Green Giant" after I dressed him in cammies! :yllol:

We had a real tall private in my cycle and yes, the DI's had a field day with his hight lol I'm sure you remember the old days too, back in 1979 when rules were a little diferent....:yllol:

“A little different”?? That is putting it mildly! When I entered the Corps in 1976, the first SGTMAJ I met had fought on Okinawa in 1945! In 1979, I don’t think there was a Marine Infantry SNCO who had not been in combat and I don’t think there was a E-8 or E9 who had not been in two wars…..Well, there were, but the vast majority had fought in both Korea and Vietnam!

Just look at who became Commandant of the Marine Corps in 1979….Gen Barrow - He had fought in three wars! :thumb:

Oh yes those were different times…..:yllol: they did not play games and they were not politically correct back then! They knew that your life depended upon the Marine next to you and expected them to be the best!

I'm sure you'll agree, the first 15 minutes of the movie "Full Metal Jacket" depicted USMC boot camp pretty accurately for us in the old days lol Our Senior was Gunny Hartman to the tee! I still remember their names, Gunny Ward, SSGT Earl, SGT Dowdy and SGT Post. The thought of Dowdy still sends shivers down my spine....OK, I'll stop and get back on topic

I was there and was also impressed. On the parents email distribution list I made comment as to how approachable he was as well as honest but appeared to be fair.

I have no doubt he is there for the CC's with a genuine desire to see them advance and more forward onto USMA next year!

My son says that it is hard but, "...that's how it is for anything that's worth it!" I know the welcome trip to Ft. Dix is something he's been looking forward to.

His last letter spoke about his first break and us being ready to splurge on pizza and cranking up the AC! Ah...the little pleasures in life!

Any parents with cadets at USMAPS check out BG Linnington's Facebook page. He just posted over 50 pictures from visiting the cadets at Ft. Dix. :thumb:

Brig. General Linnington pictures are great. I swore I would never join facebook but when I found out there were pictures that might have my new cadet there, let's just say I changed my mind. If you can't find his page go to the West Point Parent's page (just search West Point Parents) on facebook. Look in the section entitled "favorite pages" and there is a link. Happy Waldo Watching!

Waldo was shaking hands!

I was VERY FORTUNATE THIS time in that my son was in several of the photos. The one I love the best is where he's getting his coin and the look on his face...PRICELESS!

next post is my attempt at posting photos...my first photo and my last! I'll stick to my shutterfly account to record the events of their Lax Team and leave it at that! :)

Cool, the BG gave out challenge coins?
My son said something about the BG being there last night on his Sunday 7 minute call but, he didn't mention a challenge coin. I wonder how many received them?

I hope I heard him right...I was in Chevy's at the mall and our call got disconnected 4 times...but they let him call back each time! I thought I heard that he got a coin. I know each team selected members to be the "elite team" to go up against other "elite teams" for ultimate bragging rights. What "I thought" I heard is that my son's team won...they got the call home and the "elite members" got a coin. Maybe I'm just wishful thinking! Being wrong wouldn't be the first time, nor the last I suppose!
