Why the Naval Academy?

What do y’all think the best way to answer this question is? If asked in an interview, which we have coming up in the next 2 weeks, how does my son answer? He’s only applying to the Naval Academy. He wants to be a submarine commander some day. He does have an NROTC app in but his heart and dreams are in the Naval Academy. He does plan on Enlisting if both routes fail and going nuclear power and then reapplying each year until he makes it or ages out. Thanks.
 
Our answer isn’t his answer. It seems like you have given us the why. Now he should develop it.

My son only applied to USNA and his answer was that he wants to serve his country and he believes USNA bests matches his academic interests and provides the most flexibility with careers. He was able to explain his beliefs in detail.
 
He's a teenager, so the delivery of his answer isn't expected to be polished or something that one would see in a book "famous quotes" some day. The best way to answer is from his heart. If he wants to command a submarine, then clearly that's why he wants to attend USNA.
 
I agree that his WHY isn’t our WHY. I think you answered your WHY.

Also, what did he write in his essay as to the WHY? That actual question was asked. Perhaps he also answered it in MOC essays.

Buy now, after all the applications, the why should be pretty clear. Go with that. Don’t over think it.
 
Fully agree. However, if he gives the answer you gave (be sub CO), he should be prepared for the next question . . . "What if you aren't selected for subs?" Possible answer would include, "I'm going to do everything in my power to ensure I am selected but, if not, I'll go [whatever other service he's interested in] and do my very best there."

Of course, the answer needs to be his . . . just saying that he should indicate his willingness to be open to other options in case subs doesn't work out.

And that’s why DS’s selected navy: ground, water or air options!!

Very good point about “what if”. That’s where someone who thinks quick on their feet interviews well.
