Now that my DS has applied for SLE I guess I'm curious why they have the two week options in the heart of either the review time for finals or finals themselves. It almost makes me want to tell him he should really thing about that decision should he be accepted. Especially since our American legion has already told him they would be very excited to sponsor him for Boys State.
Why would SLE position itself right in the heart of Finals Week ?

Remember that schools end at different times around the country. Some kids will already be out of school while others will be in school. They schedule SLE based on what works in the West Point training schedule.

SLE (or SLS as it was called back then) did fall in my WP grad's exam week and that was the main reason he decided he was not interested in applying. He already had Boys' State and several church mission trips on his summer schedule and he wasn't interested in rescheduling exams for SLE. He had his mind made up about West Point and had been able to visit so he did not need to be "sold" on it which is basically the purpose of SLE.
I'm of the same thought. He is already sold and will be up there for his teams Crew training in Thayer Boathouse this month and next. And will be spending time with a relative's son who in his third year while we are there. I'm not comfortable adding to the opportunity of not doing his best on his finals. He is a good student but there is always a chance that day was not his best because he missed review or was allowed to take them all a week early. Just Saying.
Finals can run from early May to late June depending on area of country. USMA only has a certain window to get SLE in after academic year and before Beast starts. Heck I had less than a week between my high school graduation and I Day. One kid a year or two ago on the forum missed his graduation for R Day. Other kids had 6 or more weeks of summer before reporting. It might not work in your schedule, but many will make it work if it's important enough. If USMA is his place already, SLE might not be so important.
Yeah I guess I'm so use to the school schedules going into June here in the northeast

Some kids plan with their teachers to take their final exams before the scheduled time so that they can attend SLE. If this is something your child wants badly enough, then there are ways to make it work.
If you talk with him that is all well and good but I prefer he maximize his opportunity to do well on his exams since that is what can haunt you if you just don't have a good day. I'm not sure about other schools but his teachers seem to pile on for midterms and finals. Example DS just finished midterms yesterday and for literature it was 100 questions and two 5 paragraph essays and AP History was 150 questions and one essay. Since SLE has no bearing on anything and he is already sponsored for Boys State I will this ( ONE ) time have a realistic talk with him should he be accepted. Sometimes as a parent you need to advise vs. let them learn on their own.
