There is an oft mentioned sentiment similar to: I must say for the ones that want to be in a military and feel it’s a calling and has the drive for it. They deserve the appointment or medical waiver.

While understood 101% emotionally, this is a 101% incorrect assumption. The Military is NOT a Social Actions Agency...the DoD has one global purpose: to defend the United States of America from all threats to our safety and security. A more earthy translation is to = fight and win wars, when we as one nation, under God, indivisible, are threatened.

The only folks that shall/ will be in the military (including all other factors) are those that are determined to be medically fit to accomplish the mission, without causing harm to themselves or others. In the context of Service Academies and ROTC programs that will produce leaders, there's an inherent responsibility to protect those they will lead. Folks that do NOT meet the criteria below, can still serve their country and do...but just not in the military.

The solemn responsibility of DoDMERB and medical waiver authorities is to (It is probable that #6 will be modified within the next few weeks):

Ensure that individuals considered for appointment, enlistment, or induction into the Military Services are:
(1) Free of contagious diseases that may endanger the health of other personnel.
(2) Free of medical conditions or physical defects that may reasonably be expected to require excessive time lost from duty for necessary treatment or hospitalization, or may result in separation from the Military Service for medical unfitness.
(3) Medically capable of satisfactorily completing required training and initial period of contracted service.
(4) Medically adaptable to the military environment without geographical area limitations.
(5) Medically capable of performing duties without aggravating existing physical defects or medical conditions.
(6) Medically capable of adhering to all applicable standards, including the standards associated with the applicant's biological sex, unless exempted.
