Will an LOA show up in the portal?

I just looked on Informed Delivery (thanks @HCopter for the tip!) and my son has a letter from Admissions sitting in our mailbox since Saturday. He just received an LOE in his portal last week. Is it possible it is a paper copy of the LOE or is it most likely an LOA? Won't be home till late tonight to check but of course can find out then!
Hi. What is “informed delivery”?

It’s a feature of the postal service, that provides an image of your incoming mail. You can sign up for it on usps.com.

It’s particularly nice when your a parent of a new cadet/plebe, anxiously awaiting a letter from them during their summer training.

Ah got it. I did not know that existed. Particularly useful given the torrent of junk mail these days!

Is most likely a paper copy of the LOE.
Do not count on an LOA. They are nice to have but increasingly rare and are not necessary.
Yes, it was a paper copy of LOE which came to portal last week. Movin' on....

Please, do not even think about LOAs. It is a waste of effort. What matters is the appointment, which may not appear at all before mid-January and end April--appearing as a Big Fat Envelope, which may appear on your doorstep or appear as a BIG PURPLE BOX on the portal with no particular order. So, the important thing is to simply finish submitting the required documents.

Hello!

I'm not sure if my input has any merit, since I just received my LOA today!!! But if it helps, nothing has changed on my portal to indicate this. I received an email from my Regional Commander with the news and a reminder to finish up my application.

@hopeful2024 You received an LOA without completing your application? I didn't know they would do that. Are you sure it was a LOA and not a LOE? Either way, congratulations.

@humblebeginnings I'm pretty confident that it was an LOA. I guess it varies from applicant to applicant, but I know that my academics were my strong suit, and had all of the stuff related to it turned in. To be honest, I was quite surprised that I even received one at this stage since I didn't have much of my application completed (only my academic/personal information, sat/act scores, transcript, and one SOE). I'm starting to wonder if it was a mistake?

The LOA will specifically state what it is. I believe the verbiage is “This Letter of Assurance”... this is said towards the bottom of the page however so you may miss it.

@humblebeginnings YES, the LOA is basically, get your nomination and you will get an appointment. It has evolved a bit to mean--successfully FINISH your packet and get your nomination and you will get an appointment.
The LoA is very clear on what it is. It says 'This Letter of Assurance..."

LOA (09/24)+ JROTC nom (uploaded 10/22) status expected for quite awhile.
Letter today 10/28/19 says she will be tendered appointment around end of February 2020 when first wave of packets mailed.
That's not to say there won't be any before, just she's in a big wave, and I agree from USMA's standpoint, there is no reason to appoint until then.

My DD got the same letter last year talking about first wave of packets in February. She had an LOA too. In reality, the first big wave seemed to come the week before MLK weekend. Her appointment was part of that big wave.

Yes. It’s very possible to get an LOA without completing the app. DD got one in late August 2018. At the time, she still had to submit all her SOEs and essays. She was given until 15 October to submit the missing items or else the LOA would go away.

Yes I understand what it is as my 2021 received a LOA. I just didn't know it would be mailed if the application wasn't finished and in good order.

Update!!
So it turns out I did receive an LOA! My admissions officer emailed me about my application and within the email mentioned it in passing. However at that time, I hadn't received the actual piece of paper (came in the mail about a week later), so I just assumed I got one, but then was really confused since I didn't get an official letter :)

My DS received a LOA yesterday and it took us a couple reads to get it because it says "Congratulations! We have received all your app materials and the Admissions Committee has qualified your file. You are exactly the type of outstanding candidate the USMA is seeking." Then in the next paragraph it says "You received a Letter of Assurance based on the overwhelming strength of your file." then went on to talk about tendering most appointments in Feb. It took us a minute because we were wondering where that LOA that he "received" was. Then we realized that is what this letter was saying. (At least we think.) It came from his Regional Commander and his app is complete to include a nom. His portal did not change to indicate an LOA had been issued. Hopeful this will turn into an appointment.
