I had severe asthma as a kid, I was actually hospitalized when I was very young for it.

When I got a little older they found out that my allergies were what triggered my asthma. I haven't been to the doctor for asthma related causes in a LONG time, I'm medicated for my allergies and almost never have trouble breathing. But I read somewhere that a history of asthma can Dq you...? Is that true? Even if I have grown out of it and can control it now?

The DQ typically depends on whether after age 13, you have had asthma, asthma-like symptoms or have been prescribed medication for asthma such as an inhaler, even if you haven't experienced symptoms.

You mention that "almost never have trouble breathing" and that you can "control it now" with medication. That suggests you still occasionally have trouble breathing/asthma and are actively medicated to control. I'm not a doctor, but this will almost certainly be a DQ and you will have an uphill battle for a waiver for military service.

However, you won't know for certain until you go through the process. Just have realistic expectations.

If you are taking medications, DD Form 2492 (The DoDMERB Questionaire Question 14 specifically asks if "have you ever had or do you now have" take any medicines regularly? This would probably need a "YES" in your case and would trigger either a DQ or Remedial depending on the type of medications taken. Question #32 also asks "Have you ever had or do you now have" Asthma...which you did have and again will need to be answered "YES". As it was prior to age 13, it possibly will not trigger any further review and will not be a problem. As for the meds, I have no idea, but I remember one of our sons taking allergy meds and DoDMERB gave us fits getting it through the approval, and he hadn't taken them for three years, but we had to submit all kinds of AMI to DoDMERB for them to clear him. Best to start gathering all records related to this now, so that IF DoDMERB asks, you have them. Good Luck!!!

Ok let me rephrase this, since I was lowkey panicking when I wrote that last night

So, I talked to my mom this morning and found out I was never formerly diagnosed with Asthma, it was just triggered by what my family refers to as "The Draino Incident" of 2005 (or 2004 I can't remember). Afterwards my asthma would be triggered by allergies. But still, I was never formally diagnosed.

The purpose of my inhaler was for my allergies, which could trigger mild asthma...? Not sure how since I was never formerly diagnosed. When I was a kid the only other time it was ever triggered was when I had forgotten to take my medicine.

I take singulair (prescribed) and zyrtec (OTC) which prevent allergy attacks.

I can't remember the last time I used my inhaler, it's been years and years. But like a true boy scout I keep it in my backpack to be prepared. I'm a three year varsity letterman and powerlifter. I exercise 6 out of 7 days a week and have never had trouble breathing.

I know asthma is something you can grow out of. If that's the case, does that help me?

In fact, does ANY of the above information help my cause?
