Will my grades hurt my application?

Just got my finals for the semester back and although they are not terrible, they are not particularly great. The question of whether or not my grades are going to hurt my application has always tormented me, so I figured I would ask a more educated audience. Here is a bite size bit of what my application looks like.

GPA from prior years: 3.83 (unweighted)
Class rank: 23/177 (unweighted grades)
SAT: 1390
ACT: 29
-I scored well on my CFA maxing out 4/7 of the events, and scoring above average on the rest.
-Through working towards my glider license I have solo'd and accumulated 40 hours of flight time
-I work whenever I am not doing sports (track and tennis)
-Deeply involved in model aviation (autonomous plane flights)
-Very involved in school clubs and a moderate amount of volunteering
-I have received a nomination from one of my senators for the Naval Academy, and I have received a nomination from my congressman to attend the Air Force Academy and the Naval Academy.

grades this semester

Although my grades have never been the strongest point of my application, this semester they were a bit below my average. These are the hardest, and in my opinion the most beneficial, classes my school offers. Although I am not thrilled with how I came out of this semester, I am not pulling my hair out over it, and any insight as to how this might affect my application would be appreciated, thank you!

I wouldn't worry at all. If they asked you for first semester grades, then these will still make you out to be an impressive candidate. If they didn't, what you've achieved already is going to be great. Also, USNA generally likes to see people be in at least the top 20% of their class, where you will definitely remain after this semester (given that you're already in the top 12-15%). Great job and good luck getting an appointment! I'm a hopeful for 2024 too so I'm crossing fingers with you :)

Thankyou for the assurance, it’s not so much that I’m worried about an A vs an A-, it’s that there are a lot of strong candidates who have held a 4.0 for all of high school, and I am averaging a 3.83. Again, Thankyou for the replies, now it’s time to enjoy the rest of my senior year! Best of luck to other candidates!

I’m a newbie here, but I do know that your As and A minuses would still earn 4 quality points at many other schools, so other students’ 4.0 GPAs are not necessarily more impressive than yours. At my DD’s high school, you could make all 90s and have a 4.0. That’s why the academies (and other colleges) calculate their own GPA score.

You're in great shape!! Nothing to do now except wait. Good luck!

Worrying about an A- is like getting upset that you only got a 94 on your Physics Exam. Control the things you can and leave the past in the past. Your grades are a lot better than most people and it looks like you are taking hard courses as well.

Don't think about those grades right now. Your grades look good from what I see.

Just keep it up, do better if you can. Focus on your weaknesses and strengthen your strengths!
