I'm 17, going to be a senior in high school next year, and I'm thinking about signing up for the National Guard, mostly because they help with paying for college. But will having a year of service on your application help with entrance to a service academy? Or would it count as an extra- curricular?

A simple answer is yes, if you get your commander's endorsment. West Point can make up to 85 appointments to National Guard and Reserve soldiers. As a national guard soldier, with your commander's endorsement, you will be competing aginst other National Guard or Reserve soldier applicants.

You have to complete at least basic before you can compete as a Soldier for admission, so signing up and being a delayed entry Soldier during your senior year = just about 0 on the application.
