Will some schools throw in Room and Board if you apply your scholarship to their school?

I was super thankful to be awarded an ROTC scholarship last week. If I understand correctly, ROTC pays the schools that you get accepted into the full cost of tuition. So... I've heard that it makes sense for many schools to throw in room and board to get you to come to their school. Any tips on negotiating this? I've also had merit scholarship awards to some of my schools, so I'm thinking that I can use that as a further case in point. Any thoughts, tips, suggestions?

QUICK UPDATE;

Just spoke with _______ University and they agreed to include Room and Board if I apply my scholarship to their school. Not my number one choice school, but I'm hoping other schools will follow suit.

In order to increase responses, I will request to move this thread from the USMA forum to the ROTC forum.

We are likely going with Norwich. They throw in room and board worth $13.5K each year the scholarship is applied to their school. Pretty sweet deal.

Some schools do. My son has a choice of three schools. One he tossed aside. The other two ; one gives $9K towards housing and the other gives a discounted price of $7100 for housing. And with his merit scholarships, one school would be free and the other would cost about $2500 a year. Not a bad gig at all.

Always double check with the college's financial aid department to see if they will apply their merit scholarships toward room and board, if the tuition is covered by an ROTC Scholarship. Several colleges specifically told us that they would NOT allow their merit scholarships to apply to room and board. For some colleges, if you can get a full-tuition merit scholarship from them, then you might take the AROTC scholarship to be applied toward room and board instead. It will be taxable, unfortunately.

The school my Daughter wants to go to also takes you out of the running for any merit based scholarships if you are the recipient of a full-tuition ROTC scholarship. However, they do provide a grant of $7500 to partially pay for room and board.

from our kid's current first choice:

"If you win a on-campus AROTC scholarship then it will pay full tuition & fees...[the school] will then provide at least [$X,000] that can be used for your room and board, either on campus or off campus."

My son has a full Marine ROTC scholarship and Miami allows him to use his merit scholarship for room and board.

Anyone know if you have to pay income taxes on the room & board if it's included? I'm pretty certain that if you receive a stackable scholarship that you choose to use toward room & board (vs. tuition, books and fees, which is covered by the ROTC scholarship), that it counts as income for tax purposes. Just not sure about schools like Norwich, although the post about it being worth $13.5K/yr may indicate that Norwich will report that you received a taxable scholarship worth $13.5K.

My son has never received a 1099 from Norwich reporting his ID White scholarship, which provides room & board.
