I am a "plan way ahead" kind of person but I know I am going to need to be very flexible with DS at USNA and later in his career with setting up my plans-Semper Gumby :) . That said, I bought airline tickets for Thanksgiving already through Southwest so that I can change them if need be. What about Winter Break? I looked at the academic calendar, but I wasn't sure if the grey areas where there is no class in session also means that they are most likely on leave. I'll buy tickets through Southwest again so that we can change the reservations if needed, but I was hoping to get a general idea of "this is when they are usually released and this is when they normally have to report back". Love to hear from the experience of others!
Thank you!

The start of winter break depends on when their last final is, but the grey areas of no classes does roughly equate to the winter break. At least that's how it worked for my DD last year. She actually was able to get to the airport earlier than expected and caught an earlier flight (at no extra cost). You will find the airlines very accommodating to Mids.

Southwest is definitely the way to go. I suggest booking the flight assuming your mid will have the last final on the last day - then moving the flight up later. The return flight to BWI usually won't change - safe book that now. Plan to return about 4 hours before leave ends. Scheduling the return flight is always more critical.

which airline, and did you pay military rates with the airline to get the flight changes that easily. I have been thrilled with Southwest and prices, but they haven't been willing to change like that at the last minute with the Wanna get away cheap fares? we have been taking our chances with those but maybe we should be getting more Military fares.
