My DS needs to have his wisdom teeth extracted ( CLASS 2027), does he need "clearance, approval and or notify" and from / to whom?

I think he will have it done in February but no later than March 17th.

thanks

DS is a candidate for USNA and USMA class of 2027 and he just had his wisdom teeth out last Friday. Even though he does not have an appointment (yet), we went by the USNA guidelines for the class of 2026 regarding dental work, which was to have a full dental exam/cleaning and any dental work completed prior to reporting. Wisdom teeth should come out if recommended by your dentist, and allow for at least 8 weeks healing time after before I-Day. I believe the document says it is the same for all service academies. And that they should be removed especially if they are likely to cause problems, and if there are issues when reporting or during plebe summer, it can be disqualifying. So you don’t have to notify ahead of time, but I read on a thread here that you do have to notify if there are complications.

Thank you so much

My son had overcrowded teeth and the dentist recommended all four wisdom teeth removed. They weren't visible yet but you can see from the x-ray it's coming out sideways instead of upright. He completed the surgery last May before R-Day June 27. He's happy now that he did beforehand. Some classmates needed extraction after Beast and it wasn't the ideal situation for recuperating. You want to heal at home before R-Day.

No extra doc needed to submit to Dodmerb or USMA. The USMA dentist just noted upon checkup that the wisdom teeth were removed. My son earlier submitted mouth X-ray panels that included the wisdom teeth. The full mouth panels were required for Class of 2026.

My son is in the Air Force. They are very serious about them keeping their teeth in good condition. My son has to have his teeth looked at once a year in order to keep his qualification or whatever they call it. When he went for his pilot physical they told him he has very good teeth and that they can tell he had work on them (braces) They told them lots of people come in with really bad teeth.

I believe wisdom tooth extraction is technically considered a surgery. And per DODMERB guidelines, having surgery constitutes a change in your health status that the candidate is required to report to DODMERB. Does not mean that any appointment is necessarily in jeopardy. But they need to be aware of this change, particularly if dental x-rays were sent in that are no longer current or accurate to the candidates health situation.

Don't overthink it. Approval from anyone...No. Just let his Admissions Counselor know and ask if their advice.
