Wisdom Teeth?

I still have all of my wisdom teeth, even after active duty. A LOT of fellow sailors were laid up in racks during boot camp after having them removed there...definitely would not recommend! If they have to come out, do it before reporting.

Thanks everyone for your help! I may be luck enough to not need my wisdom teeth removed (none are impacted, which is a plus). I was just wondering if they forced you to take em out. But if I don't have to do it, I won't.

Thanks again!

I would remove them regardless. Just saying...

If I have already sent in my dental X-Rays and plan to get my wisdom teeth out in April, should I notify DoDMERB, WP, or both?

a few people mentioned impacted teeth above and Coincidentally I went to the Dentist today to get my x-rays done and they noticed I had an impacted molar. I am already accepted. Anyone know if this will change anything/ DQ me? Also, How would having surgery to remove this tooth impact my medical qualification?

It won't. Oral surgery for wisdom teeth or impacted teeth is treated differently than other surgeries provided there are no complications

...But a real soldier would skip the dentist, and dig that tooth out with a bayonet. Probably a dirty one too. Just saying.

I must have the wrong dentist. She is recommending my DD have her wisdom teeth removed before R-Day which I have no problem doing except when she quoted me $1800 WITH dental insurance coverage!
They are no where near breaking through. Do you think we'll be forced to remove them?

@Mere2033 - that price may be the going rate in your area, but I 'd encourage you to get more prices. My dentist would not pull wisdom teeth (he recommended going to a dental surgeon) so I visited 3 or 4 and got price quotes (there was no cost to do this). The price varied a bit but was most affected by what anesthesia would be used. I am in a high cost of living area and the quotes I got were much lower than what you were quoted and we paid completely out of pocket.

The cost for removing all four of DD's was about $1500; luckily our dental insurance covered 80%. It would have been about $150 less, but she needed two rounds of anesthetic.

The funny thing is that the oral surgeon, upon seeing her, said, "Oh, you won't need much anesthetic." (She's not very big) However, halfway through the procedure, she started coming around and began humming and trying to sing, of all things, "Amazing Grace"! He told her to shut up (in good humor) and gave her another dose. We laughed about it when he gave her back to me to take home.

I am in a ridiculously expensive city and the Oral Surgeon would be billing my insurance $3800. really? The Anesthesia alone is $900. I'll shop around. Was hoping to avoid that whole process.

If you have decent insurance I strongly recommend that they be removed before R day. WP will want to schedule a removal before they become impacted and there is little support/ help available at WP during recovery from what I have been told. We scheduled way before R day and my DS teeth were deep and would eventually have needed to come out. Recovery took much longer than expected. Given the rigors of physical activity and studying, if you can swing it, do it.

Mere2033 we were able to get some of it paid for by regular medical insurance, not just dental. Something to consider.

When I called the Saunders Dental Clinic(pg 14, Candidate Instructions) today for my DS, who is having his wisdom teeth removed in April and we have already sent X-rays, I was told that my DS will need to have another panorex done to send in to update his file to the address on pg 14, ATTN: DENTAC Class of 2021, 606 Thay Rd, BLDG #606

Mine was told the same thing. He had the teeth out last summer. Someone else on the board said they weren't told to update. He did but his portal was green before he updated.

My insurance covered the full cost of the extractions between medical and dental.

My DS was quoted $416 per tooth times 4, plus three 15 mins of deep sedation or general anesthesia (not sure why only 3 not 4 on the anesthesia) Anyway, total $2234, after insurance $734 out of pocket.

We had the dentist send a letter indicating full healing and the original panarama with the four teeth "x" out. DS did not have any further requests. If you do the procedure beforehand you are saving the Army a ton of money.

Does this mean that you did not have to pay for another panarama? The dentist just put an "x" on the original (meaning removed) and stated "full healing" and it was accepted? That would same me money on getting another panorex, I think after extraction we will max out on dental insurance.

Son's dentist did not charge for the additional panax. Billed our insurance that won't pay due to it being less than 3 years in between and is going to write it off if they don't pay. He was just that excited for my son. He's been his dentist my son's entire life.
