I wasn’t sure if I should post here or in the DODMERB thread, but does anyone see a problem with my son getting his wisdom teeth out in February? Should be a routine extraction of all 4 wisdom teeth. He has an appointment to the Naval Academy and has already passed DODMERB, etc.

The reason I’m asking is he also has an appointment to West Point and in their permit to report instructions, there is some language about “avoid elective surgeries or DODMERB may not be cleared”, etc. I’m questioning if routine wisdom teeth removal would really fall into that category.

Your son can call his assigned DoDMERB tech to discuss what they want to see or know about wisdom teeth.

What they don’t want is a complicated extraction being done a week before reporting.

my girl did hers November her senior year in high school - at the time she had an LOA but had not gotten DODMERB clearance or her appointment - but she did call DODMERB and let them know - she had to send some paperwork from the surgeon after the surgery then had to send paperwork again showing that all was clear and she was able to return to all normal activities a few weeks later - have your son call DODMERB, my daughter is a 2C currently - never know how things might change.

That timing works great. My plebe did the same. Oral surgeries should be completed more than 8 weeks before reporting. After surgery, have the oral surgeon give you a summary of the procedure outcome to send to DODMERB, and the medical/dental email address in your report packet paperwork. If you have the time and resources, it’s one less thing to worry about during the academic year. It can also be done during future winter breaks with the permission of the SA medical unit.

That’s very helpful - thank you!
