Withdrawing app, attending Vandy / AROTC; Thank you SAF

DS got into Vandy ED2 today. He decided in mid December, after his AROTC interview at Vandy, to apply ED2 there and if admitted, attend rather than attend USMA if appointed.
Soon after he made that decision and submitted the application to Vandy, he got an LOA (already had an LOE). If he had the LOA initially, he probably wouldn't have even gone down to interview at Vandy. He also still needs to get cleared for an ankle injury, which was probably weighing on his mind back then. It should be fine to be cleared in 2 or 3 weeks, however. It's funny how things work out, he had his heart set on USMA until that interview.
But, I'm excited for the ROTC route that he'll pursue and I wish everyone best of luck in attending or getting appointed to USMA. I'm happy for DS but a little sad, too. USMA is a special place.
Thanks for all the help from everyone on SAF throughout this process. I'll continue to stick around throughout his journey so I can earn my 5 year and maybe even my 10-year member badge!

I will miss your travelogues and the ones they brought to this site concerning USMA. Hope not to need any on Vandy. Actually, if I did, that would be pretty good. And, glad to know somewhere reliable to turn. Good luck to your son at Vandy and with AROTC, especially obtaining the waiver.

DO stick around, and help out where you can! Congrats, despite the ‘little bit of saddness’ I’m sure it’s kind of a ‘saying goodbye to a dream’ kind of thing too. You’ve been a cheerleader of this appointment process for a LONG time. Change is always hard. Or maybe different is a better word than hard.

It’s got to feel good though to have SOMETHING settled. And what a fantastic journey set before you. Congrats!

Congratulations to your DS. Vanderbilt is a great school, beautiful campus and a super academically challenging environment. Good Luck and I am sure he will do well

For my own education, please explain ED2. I am familiar with ED and EA. The Early Decision issue crops up annually, about whether or not an ED acceptance eliminates the opportunity to attend USMA if appointed.

Vanderbilt has 2 rounds of binding ED. ED1 and ED2. both are binding as far as i know. i dont think they have an EA option.

Vanderbilt conducts their early decision in 2 waves - not really sure why. ED1 deadline was November 1, and ED2 was Jan. 1 (which is also the deadline for RD applicants). ED2 finds out their admittance status mid-Feb (either a yes or no, no chance of waitlist or deferral). RD applicants can get waitlisted. Last year they had about 4,000 total ED applicants and admit about half of their incoming class of 1,600 (enrolled students) from that pool. The other half come from the 32,000 applicants in the RD round. ED1 and 2 are binding, with no special consideration for SA's, or so we were told.

ED is a good deal for both the kids and the institutions, as it provides some certainty early in the process: schools like to get some high performers locked up and kids just want it over with. It tends to improve applicants' chances for admission by letting them trade in their right to go elsewhere. ED2 just allows applicants to apply ED to another place if they don't get into their first choice.

My son will be joining the NROTC Navy option next fall; I may PM if that's alright as well. . .he's heard that first semester chem class is scary!
