Women at USMA

I will chime in what my DS has shared regarding females in his class, after completing plebe summer: “nbd”. In his company, he said there were two kids that struggled over the summer physically. One a male and one a female. He saw no difference in them...they both struggled. The female he respected bc she gave her all. Every time. And improved during the summer. The male? Not so much. He was a ‘chit surfer’ (that was a new term for me). Looked for every excuse to get out of the physical part of the summer. He didn’t improve much if any.

Honestly, I don’t think anyone could look at any academy and pick one being LESS physically demanding than the other. Some elements will be harder for individuals than other elements are for another person. Cannot blanket statement anything in life. BC we are all different, and all have different strengths and weaknesses. Collectively, it’s that admissions puzzle that’s put together for each class. The whole is bigger than the sum of its parts. Or something like that.

My point, is that DS has NO comment/opinion on gender at ALL when we were all discussing the summer over parents weekend. I was wondering how, if at all, gender played a role in summer activities. It wasn’t even a mention. They are like brothers and sisters.

Good luck to your DD! She will find her passion. Like any college, it has to be the right fit. I think visiting each academy and getting a feel for the culture is a good idea. DS visited USAFA and USNA, choose USNA. Now a few weeks into the academic year, he is certain he made the right choice. He went with his gut, and so far, despite the suck, it’s been an amazing experience!!

Wait. What was the question [emoji848]?

@BDHuff09, hat tip to your comments. I 100% agree. My own comments were meant very much tongue-in-cheek, in response to @DDmom, but if they fell flat, wouldn’t be the first time. I’ll now excuse myself from this thread.

I took no offense to your comments as I meant to offend no one with mine. We could all use thicker skin as we read through posts on the forums. It’s hard to know when someone is making a statement lightheartedly because the written word is not emotional.
In regard to the carts used at navy, my dd was very sore from having to haul her bag around all day along with the other bag they assigned with the issue items. If they had a cart my dd would have happily used it, I’m sure the reasoning for usma not supplying them is as strong as the reason for navy issuing them. And for beast being longer or shorter than the others, maybe navy was as long but Air Force was not my dd talked to her friends from prep at both navy and Air Force and none had similar experiences as usma beast. Not that one is better than another just different, after all the end goal is to create the best military officer possible for the chosen branch.

Find the place that you feel at home and go with that...that is if you are lucky enough to get nominations and appointments to all!

Very respectfully DDMom, I would say that luck has minimal influence. Performance, drive, talent, competitive spirit and intellect got them through the 2 year application and selection process. I tip my hat to all of these kids. Proud of them all. DD has found her people and loves it there. Again no offense intended. Just my .02.

I think luck plays a huge part, but I also believe in fate and that all things happen for a reason.

Luck is absolutely a factor. Ask any student who is accepted at a SA and then is injured in a serious fashion. Or the student who desperately wanted to attend a SA and passed every thing except the medical portion (an area where the applicant has little control over). My son came very close to losing his spot at WP due to an injury. He was lucky/blessed that the situation was caught - literally in the nick of time.
