Hi, I am a third try USNA Applicant for 27. I recreationally row and decided to start recruitment with USNA WRow. I was wondering if this increases my chances if I am a recruited athlete?

I actually tried the same thing last year as a 3rd time reapplicant. My 500 and 2000 erg times put me in the top 10% for the Men's heavyweight crew, and I came close to getting recruited, but I ultimately was not recruited because I had never competed on a team or in a boat. If you're not on a team, I would highly reccomend joining a local team or your school's club team.

Here's a link to USRowing's club map:

If your school doesn't have a club team, I would look into starting your own team, which I am currently doing at my school. Not only will you get to be on a team, but it provides leadership and shows great initiative.

DD was a recruited for rowing.

There was some confusion about LOA's, but at the end of the day she was not given an LOA for rowing at Navy; I think because her application looked pretty strong. No LOA, but the Coach called her every 10 days or so to check in on her application progress, and he seemed to be following her application closely on the USNA side as well.

Ya, I think "at the margin" being a recruited athlete makes a difference. If you have 2K Erg times from 7:20 to 8:00 you should get a long look. A coach or two who will vouch for your stroke and work ethic is a help. If you don't have much exposer to coach's, you could start putting in significant time in a single. People who row singles regularly are always cleaner rowers. Coaches know this, it makes you more interesting and may make up for less Exp in competitions--at least in getting them to give you a first look.

No promises, but I can check .with DD to see if she has any wisdom to offer. The two things DD identifies with most are the USNA and rowing. I suspect she'd be pleased to talk with any rower taking a 3rd shot at USNA admissions.

She is coming off Deployment in August. I will be meeting her on Aug 2nd to ride her ship back to San Diego. I would be happy to ask her to get ahold of you when I see her. Just shoot me a private message with whatever contact method works best for you and I will pass it on to her. No worries if you take a-pass on the offer.

I row a single scull myself. Great fun, but you folks who race are a breed apart; and a 3rd try at USNA? Ur awesome!

BTW: Understanding that USNA is obviously your goal, you might also consider the Div2 USCGA women's team. I visited the school and the team with my DD back in 2015. We were both impressed with the place and the cadets. A very special school and ethos, not to be overlooked.

Thank you! I will PM you...

Unfortunately, in my area, I do not have any teams I can compete on. The only teams that I can row on are University Teams. I talked to the wrow head coach and he said it is fine due to me being a UCONN Waterbury student (where there are no rowing teams available that are associated with that campus). I got the times from him for 2k: 7:30 6k: 24:00. I reached the 2k time but I am a little off on the 6k time. I am at a 25:13 for the 6k time. Will my being off on the 6k time affect my recruitment badly?

USCGA is D3, not D2, but they were ranked as high as sixth in D3 last year. My DD joined that team last spring and it's a great group. The school is located right on the river and they have a good season schedule (including a visit by USMA's team in 2022.)

The 6k time isn't too far off, there's still plenty of time to get that down. I wouldn't worry too much about it as long as you continue to train. All your times are important, but from my experience with the Navy men's team, they seem to emphasize the 2k the most since the races are 2k.

Hi, does anybody know if they do/don’t notify you if you’re recruited?

You mean notified (contacted) by the coach? That’s what being recruited means. They contact you. They communicate with you. They ask about your grades, test scores, athletic abilities. They get to know you. If they are interested in you and think you would be good for their team, they will continue.

Have you submitted a recruiting questionnaire for your sport? Waded through all the links below to educate yourself about the recruiting process?
Yes I did, and I have been in contact with him all semester. I have constantly updated him on application changes and submissions, as soon as 2 weeks ago. He has not explicitly said if I am recruited. Should I assume I am not a recruited athlete?

There are various levels of ‘recruitment’. There are ‘blue chips’… those the coaches consider top of their list. Essentially each coach gets so ‘blue chip’ spots. Essentially if someone is 3Q they can advocate strongly for them. These are few and far between, teams might have 1 or even zero. Then they have various levels of recruitment from there all the way down to, if they get in, they can try to be a walk on. The coach might not answer this question if asked. The honest answer is your level of recruitment can change based upon how many recruits they land higher on the list than you. It’s not uncommon for a recruit to move up and down a list as coaches recruit. It’s clear that you want to attend USNA, which is great. The coaches may or may not have tagged you as a recruit, only they know if they have and to what level.
