Wondering about CFA Scores

I took the CFA this past Monday, and these were my scores:

69’ basketball throw
4 pullups
9 second shuttle run
87 situps
51 pushups
7:16 mile

I’m under the Nov 1 deadline so I have submitted these scores, I’m not sure if they are passing (would have loved to have done better on pull-ups, pushups and shuttle), and was wondering if anyone on here had any insights?

For reference, I submitted mine already and I passed my CFA.

55' BB Throw
14 Pull ups
9.2 Seconds Shuttle Run
86 Sit Ups
56 Push Ups
7:30 Mile

Your pull ups and push ups are a bit on the low end. If you fail, you may get a second chance to retake it. If they feel you are competitive enough, they will give you a second chance. I believe CFA is just weighted 10%, but you need to be 3Q (Academically, Medically, and Physically). I wish you good luck. I am hoping to attend USAFA and be apart of Class of 2025.

BTW: I am a male.

Thank you for your quick response. How did you find out if you passed your CFA? Wishing you the best of luck.

I found out through a personal meeting I had with my assigned counselor. I was apart of the USAFA FVE this year and they gave me a personal meeting to talk about my application, but I believe if you give them a call they wouldn't mind telling you. Also, if you are interested if you have submitted your DoDMERB exam, they can see if you are Pilot Qualified. I don't know if they can see that for everyone, but just something you can ask if you wanted to be a pilot.

Any tips on increasing pull-ups? I can do about 5 solid. Everything else on my app is good to go. I was in FVE as well, but missed a few sessions due to the hurricane. Best of luck to you both, hope to see you on I Day 😎

My ALO (who proctored my exam) allowed me to link my feet, which allowed me to do more than I thought I’d be able to (I’m a bigger dude, pushing 6’3” lol pullups arent my strong suit). I would work with a band and do other pulling workouts (bent over rows, etc) and also forearm strengthening workouts like dead and flexed arm hangs, negatives, etc. I would say don’t burn out on the pull-ups tho, leave a day of rest in between each day training in order to recover. USAFA or bust :)

I would recommend doing a few after your workouts. Add any upper body exercises to your workout. So if you pass your doorway and have a place to pull ups, do 1 or 2 pull ups until it because easy and slowly add more over time.

1) Get a pull-up bar to hang on your doorframe
2) Armstrong Pull-Up program. Last year when I applied the first time (c/o 2024), I could do 2 pull-ups at the start of my training... Went with this program and did 16 on test day. And it sticks with you. I just took my CFA for c/o 2025, and hit 18 with ease. Definitely could've done 20. It works wonders. Even just a few weeks will bring you up to 10+, if you're already at 5. It was developed by Major Charles Armstrong, USMC, who then used it to set a world record... Trust me, it works.

good info.

How important are pull-ups on CFA, if all other numbers are above average?

Assuming that all events are weighted the same (blind assumption, no proof for this) then you get the most points per rep for pull-ups. Say each event is 100 points, 100 being the max, 0 being you did not complete, then 1 pull up would be 5.5 points while 1 sit-up would be just over 1 point.
Again, I don’t know this for sure, this is just a blind assumption.

Good luck to you. I maxed my pullups and what helped me to improve was doing 60-70% of my max pullups every time I walked through my door. You just have to get tons of reps in throughout the day. Luckily, your body tends to recover pretty fast from pullups and pushups if you dont go overboard. When I started I could only do around 5 too, so I focused on doing controlled negatives with each rep, and after a several weeks built up to 8, 9, 10 reps and so on. Falcon FVE here as well! Go Duece!

Pullups and pushups are weighted much more than most of the events--not sure if this is true for USAFA, but USMA requires them to be video recorded, which even more testifies to the fact that they NEED to be done with the right form in order to earn those weighted points. To train for pullups, focus on which muscles you are using: you can do 1/4 of a pullup just by using your shoulder muscles. Think about that. The rest will be your triceps/biceps. Use the "question-mark" approach, where your body should curve up, back, and then curve over the bar like as if you were tracing a question mark. Then build on the number of reps every hour. Good luck!

I tried that a few days ago and I've been able to get more pull-ups out, not sure why crossing my feet helps, but it did!

I checked it out and it definitely feels like it's helping.

Yeah, this helps me too. Everytime I walk into my room I knockout 5 or 6
