Woo hoo - son got his appointment in the mail today!

Well, it wasn't quite in time for Christmas, but I guess today was good enough! :yay: Got his AF appointment today after receiving his Navy one on Monday! He's going out to CVW in January at Navy, and then I guess has to make a final decision. (Although everything he's discussed has been in terms of "when I to go AF" so when I asked him if he was still 100% sure he was choosing AF, he replied "Yeah. Duh!" ) :wink: But I'm so glad and proud of him and that he even has this decision to make! :shake:

Anyone else get theirs today? Thought I'd read of other people being told theirs were being mailed on Tuesday as well!

Thanks to everyone for all the help in getting us to this point! :thumb:
 
Wow, that is awesome, I am very jealous. Then again, I haven't checked the mail today! That is an awesome achievement for your son. Hope he has a great rest of the break with an awesome Christmas present (kind of).

Congrats to you and your son, Marciemi. I have a couple of vacancies on the board for the Wisconsin Air Force Academy Parents Association....I think I know who I am going to call.:biggrin:

Yippee....my Daughter received her APPOINTMENT today too USAFA :smile:
she was sooooo excited...what a wonderful Christmas gift!!!

My only disappointment was that I was hoping there would be info in the packet about orientation. It said just that once you send in your acceptance, some time in February you would get an additional information packet, but nothing specific. Bummer - I was hoping to make more definite plans/air, etc. for orientation now.

My understanding is that you do not have to actually accept an appointment to go to orientation. A lot of appointees go to orientation and make their mind up after being there for orientation. To go to orientation, however, a candidate must have received an appointment.

Big White Envelope!!

What a Christmas surprise....my son received a big white envelope with offer of appointment letter dated 12/21, mailed out 12/22. Nomination from AZ Congressman Trent Franks.

Does anyone know what the schedule is? when to book flights? It looks like they have bus pick up so no need for car.

Several years ago when we went with my D I rented a car. If I remember correctly, they had pick up to/from hotel but not to/from airport. I think several people used hotel shuttle from airport though - not certain. Frankly, while we didn't use the car a whole lot - I was thankful to have it. The shuttle is nice to/from AFA and the candidate didn't really notice but parents do have some down time and having a car gave me flexibility. I took the AFA shuttle from the hotel but in the evening while my D was staying the night at USAFA I was able to drive around a bit and got to know some other parents and generally see some of the area.

As to schedule, I don't remember much. We arrived at our hotel mid afternoon on a Sunday. Had dinner with several other appointees and their families and a few cadets- pretty sure that is fairly early because the cadets have to be back by 7:00 so if you hope to do that, plan to get to C-Springs early (assuming someone on the forum will be planning that). The next morning we got on the AFA bus to the base and stayed for multiple briefings. They tell you everything possible and some things you have no interest in at all! There is a question answer session (one of my favorite memories of that is a particular young lady asking some specific questions ... any 2011 from 2nd Orientation session remember that? :yllol: ) Mid-day the appointees are taken off to hook up with cadets and they stay overnight. Parents have another few briefings without the kids - don't really remember much - someone more recent can chime in. Parents went back to hotel in the afternoon. Next morning, if parents wanted, they came back to USAFA for a tour then some down time and finally pick up your appointee later in the day. I seem to remember it being mid/late afternoon that we picked up our kids but not certain. I do, however, remember racing to the airport and barely making our flight. Perhaps a 2013 can fill in with more recent memories!
 
YAY! CONGRATS! I'm so happy for you (and your son), although I wish your son was going to USNA with mine--still no word from AF for him, so looks like he'll be sending in his USNA acceptance soon.
 
The bulk of USAFA appointments go out in March so if there is a chance he or she may want to Air Force rather than than Navy you can wait until May 1st.

Thanks Gasdoc--We (Mom and Dad) assumed he would want USAFA, since we are both grads, but you know what happens when we ass-u-me! Ever since NASS, he's been leaning more toward Navy and seems to have made his decision. I'm happy to say that it is HIS decision. He's looking forward to forging his own path.
