Word to the Wise

USNA varsity athletes typically take the PRT before they go in season, and many have weight waivers for various sports. Even women’s basketball, crew, hammer throw in track, etc. Once they are seniors, and pretty much right after their last varsity contest, they are owned by one of the strength and conditioning coaches to go on a carefully constructed diet and severe cardio regimen to get the excess weight off in a healthy and well-managed manner. They must meet standards and pass last pre-comm physical to get commissioned. You’ll see the seniors at spring practice pedaling madly on the sidelines or running endless laps.

So interesting! I have never thought about what happens to an athlete with a waiver once they are done and entering their service roles. So those big football players will get down to standard weight? I would think some of those kids have never been within standards. They would need whole new uniforms. Serious statement. Is there no such thing as waivers once they graduate?

It’s a clear line for graduation and commissioning - almost parallel to what it took to get an appointment - academically sat, conduct and military performance sat, PRT sat, body fat and weight sat. I believe many of the football players go Marine, so they have really got to get lean and mean.

As an aside, there are a tiny handful of mids every year who get their degree and walk the stage, but do not get commissioned. It’s usually something they didn’t pass in their pre-comm physical or something more serious in terms of disease. If they are a 2/c or 1/c, they can usually stay to complete the degree if they can manage it.

No such thing as military performance at USMMA. I'd imagine there are as many football players going Air Force as Marines, doesn't really apply.

Very sorry, I was still on a train of thought related to the USNA tangent above.
Back to original topic.

I’m a candidate for the class of 2023. USMMA just requested that I complete a BCA to test my body fat, since my weight exceeds the limitations for my height. Am I allowed to have a parent measure me?
I was wondering if you could send or post the BCA file on here? I have been requested to do the same, but I couldn´t open the document.

From @cousmma5280 earlier in this thread if this is what you're looking for. You'll need to check if the standards are different for 2023 and you must have a health professional do the measurements. Also in the post:
Body Composition Assessment
"Body composition is assessed by weight and height screening. . .
On entrance day, Plebe Candidates will be weighed and those Plebe Candidates that exceed the weight for their height, as outlined below in the Weight Height Table, will have their body fat measured by tape measurement. Those that fail to meet the Academy body fat standards of 22% for males and 33% for females may be denied admission."

I have a huge problem with denying admission or potentially disenrolling someone for this unless you are waaaaaay over. The methods use to measure beady fat are incredibly imprecise and I think provide no actual useful measurement.

I meant the PDF form to where I have to take it to the school nurse/doctor for the measurement. I was emailed the document, but unable to view it.

Sorry I didn't understand your question and do not have that PDF form. I would call USMMA Admissions and request it again.

Well, everybody who applies and doesn't meet the height weight/bodyfat standard fails DoDMERB and requires a waiver. I doubt the academy gives even a single waiver anymore for that since a kid collapsed and almost died during indoc. They WILL disenroll plebes for the BCA, if you make it to 2/C year they usually work with you. So essentially everybody who doesn't meet that standard is denied admission and most are disenrolled plebe year if they fail it consistently enough.

Thank you for replying! I will definitely do that!

My DS had to be taped in October. He was 195 pounds at 6'. Health care provider specifically described him as obviously fit, muscular not fat. He also has a heavy bone structure--great for football. He is still in the running.

taping is bad enough, the calipers were worse. If you are going to deny someone something of significant value then you should do it the right way.

Most gyms have machines that are way more precise than a freaking tape measure but if I brought the machine results to NavSci that showed below the limit and their tape showed above they would still kick me out ... freakin ridiculous!

I'm on board with the concept, I just think their methods are poor and imprecise to say the least. Everyone carries their weight differently and to measure only two places on a body and think that gives you something even resembling slight accuracy is foolish.
