“In a recent interview with BBC Radio 4, Wardle revealed that he programmed the game to accept more than 12,000 possible guesses (based on the number of five-letter words in the dictionary), but only about 2,500 of those words are included in the game’s pool of randomized acceptable solutions. More specifically, the game’s source code indicates that there are 12,972 acceptable guesses, but only 2,315 solutions, according to online analysts.

“If your strategy is just to guess one of the 12,972 words at random, your chances at getting it right are only 1 in 12,972, which is less than a hundredth of a percent,” explained Aaron Berger, a Ph.D. student in mathematics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and an occasional Wordle player.”

Yet still more probable than me hitting a hole in one…..

Edit: HIS NAME IS WARDLE... it all makes sense now

wardle - good starter word for 6-letter puzzle.

Yeah, trying to guess at random isn’t really a “strategy.”

My strategy is to get as many letters in the first two or three guesses so as to win it in four, or less. Sometimes it takes longer and rarely it takes shorter than four.

I'm not sure I should even attempt this. I don't need the hit to my ego. On the other hand, Mastermind was one of our favorite games to play as kids.

Frustrating when you find out your word isn't a real word right? Well imagine the alternative:

- There are 13k five letter words in the English language, (AARGH, ABACA, ABACI, etc...) Our odds of nailing it on the first try are 1/13k.
- But there are 11.9M permutations of 5 letters (26^5 = AAAAA, AAAAB, AAAAC, etc...)
- So if Wordle didn't require real words, our odds of solving on the first try would be 900x harder

We'll see how this affects my productivity in the coming days. I'm going to try to stay to the one a day pace.

I knew I shouldn't have tried it. My ego is crushed.

I started with Chase
Lungs
Unify
Human
Cumin
Mount

Clearly, it's been decades since I played Mastermind.

Hmm, probably don't want to reuse letters that have already been eliminated...
Yeah, It's going to take some practice. I have never been the best at strategy. Old skills I had from Mastermind died 30 years ago. I am now down the rabbit hole of archived words. No homework, housework, or dinner will be done at this rate. Yikes
