Quick Q, I have interest in trying out for lightweight crew(received an email from the coach) and boxing. Should i bring my own boxing gloves and wraps? or will they be provided.

Also, i'm not sure what I did, but my left wrist has been hurting recently. I don't believe it is anything serious because I have full mobility with no pain, there is no swelling (associated with sprains), no dark spots (associated with fractures), and no excruciating pain. I feel no loss of strength when i clench my fist. So all signs are normal. But when I bend my wrist far at a 90 degree angle, particularly to do push-ups, i feel sharp pain in my wrist.

If it comes down to it, I know i'll be able to muscle through it, but if i were to go to medical during plebe summer just to get it checked out, would i be sent home and told to apply again next year?

More direct question, exactly how harsh is USNA medical with sending people home due to injuries? keeping in mind that my wrist is not in serious condition as i explained above, would they let me participate in plebe summer with a wrap on my wrist?

My guess if you only showed up with a most likely "irritated" wrist then perhaps a chit may be given but I don't think they'll send you home over it. I had a pain like this a few months back, iced, rested, and, stretched it and it was gone in just several days.

The medical staff is very accommodating. If your wrist continues to hurt then you'll be put on chit. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I've never heard of anyone being sent home due to injury. Hell, I've seen wheelchair trains during Plebe Summer. My year a person hurt their back and was on chit till Christmas. I doubt your discomfort is that serious to warrant a change in your medical status... Still, lay off the pushups for the time being.

Everything will be provided. As for the wrist, it's a little early to be talking about chits. You'll be doing early morning PT starting Wednesday, so apply ice today/tonight and look up some wrist stretching exercises online. If you go in right away complaining of what seems from your description to be a fairly minor issue, you MAY be categorized as a 'whiner' or 'THAT guy/gal' that is trying to get out of PT. Making the effort goes a long way with the detailers, as well as your fellow Plebes. I'm not saying to power through regardless of the pain because you don't want to risk a more serious injury, but try to tough it out, at least in the first few days.

May I asked what happened? This sounds exactly what is happening to our plebe.

Yep old thread. But if you are asking what happens if your plebe is injured during PS, or if they get sent home….the answer is that they will be well cared for by most excellent staff.

Plebes are watched/inspected closely for medical issues. Lots of opportunities for stress fractures, overuse type injuries. Foot (think blisters) care is monitored (my oldest had his feet ‘inspected’ nightly by his detailers).

It’s also up to the plebe to make their injuries known. Not a good idea to ‘push through’, as you can do a whole lot more damage, than if it was tended to initially.

Tons of posts and threads about the excellent medical care they receive. But if you are inquiring about if USNA has a policy of sending Mids home if they are injured? It doesn’t happen often. It would have to be something that prevents them from commissioning. We had one a couple years ago that had a heart ailment discovered (through the AMAZING care through Navy). My own had some COVID issues that were monitored and cared for…better care than he would have had under our private insurance at home. There are Mids that receive surgery during their time and are rehabbed various ways, depending. But they aren’t “kicked out” to heal, and reapply. They are very, very well cared for by the best medicine out there.

USNA has invested a lot in your son/daughter. They are Navy family now. And will be cared for very well. They will fix them up, as their goal is to commission them as officers in 47 short months.

Old thread, but same process for injuries. If that’s what you were wondering about.
