Hi! My DD is interested in running XC but would rather not run indoor/outdoor track. She would like to add some variety instead of running for all 3 seasons. Some of the civilian schools we are looking into require XC runners to participate in all 3. Does anyone know the same is required at the USMA or any other SA? Thank you!

If you are on the track team or XC team, you run all year--or someone will come in and take your place and you will not have a spot on the team. One of my kids ran track at USMA...there is always someone faster waiting to take your place or someone faster being recruited. In collegiate sports there is no 'off season.'
edited to add: They are happiest with their teammates who become their friends and social support network. The coaches become social support. It is a different experience than high school. The team becomes their family. (Also, they get benefits, privileges, & opportunities based on team membership.)

West Point also has a Club-level Marathon Team that is another option. I think they have a time trial long distance event and take the top runners. At least, that is how they used to do it a long time ago. But that is also a full academic year commitment.

Another thing that your DD may want to reconsider is that you are doing something all year long. If you're not doing Corps/Club-level sports, then you are doing intramurals sports and/or drill on the parade field. If she can qualify for one those teams in something she enjoys doing then that is better than standing in formation on the Plain.

One more thing, @Whiller if your daughter is recruited for the x-country team or working with the coaches now, it is best to continue that engagement at least through CBT and plebe year. She will benefit from being on a varsity team.

I will reinforce that Division I Athletics is a full time job and extremely competitive at any school. Most high school athletes were never exposed to this level of training. They will practice 6-7 days a week 2-3 hours each day. It takes 100% commitment and I only want to run this or that is a quickest way to get you cut. My DD also ran at USMA and her time in the weight room or on the track with her teammates are some of her fondest memories.

Thank you! I’ll pass on the information and have her contact the coaches.
