My son applied to the USMMA, received a Congressional Nomination, and was being considered for the NMMI Prep Slot (his ACT/SAT were a teensy bit lower than needed for direct entry). We've been sitting on the edge of our seat! We WANTED for him to do the Prep Slot because we felt like it would really ready him for the academic challenges he'll see at the USMMA. And it's such an honor, even without direct entry. Guess what! Tonight the contact at the Congressmans Office called to tell my son that he was getting the NMMI Prep Slot into the USMMA! We're elated! He said we'll receive our letter in the mail from the USMMA real soon. So excited, I can't even sleep. To think... A few months ago there was a Talent Search Counselor (they go around to all of the high schools and help the kids apply for schools, scholarships, etc) who asked my son where he was applying to school. My son told her the USMMA. She immediately called me (at work, because it was so urgent) and told me that she was concerned that my son was aiming for something "out of his league" and that he should definitely have more "realistic and obtainable options". We were so disheartened when she said that, but we kept trying and didn't give up. He kept at it, and now look! He's an outstanding kid, and I don't just say that because I am partial. He's really someone special, and I'm excited about his future! Now I need to plan a trip to the NMMI and the the USMMA.
