All,

This has came up in other threads, and I figured many others may also run into this question in the near future. You may take the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery, or ASVAB, in place of the ACT/SAT to submit for the MO NROTC Scholarship. The ASVAB is the same test applicants for enlistment in the military take to assist in determining jobs for which they are eligible. You must attain a minimum score of 74 on the ASVAB to be eligible to submit the application.

The option to take the ASVAB has always been part of the application, not just in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Normally students who are applying for the scholarship have taken the ACT/SAT regardless due to college admission requirements, but there are always exceptions to the rule. Numerous ASVAB preparation guides exist in print and digital forms, and highly competitive scores will be in the 90s. Recommend 93+.

If your local Marine recruiter is telling you to take an ASVAB, I promise its not a cheap trick to get you to enlist. We are trying to make each applicant as competitive as possible, and a high ASVAB score may help boost the application for someone with a less than stellar ACT/SAT and is no longer able to take either test due to the restrictions.

I would suggest checking with the Navy ROTC Scholarship office. pnsc_nrotc.scholarship@navy.mil to get confirmation of this. Also, you will still need the SAT/ACT to gain admission to the school to which you take your scholarship. It doesn't hurt to take the ASVAB, but if you want to go to college, you must do what the college admissions offices at each college require.

To be clear, I am only speaking to the application requirement for a qualifying score on the SAT/ACT/ or ASVAB for the Marine Option Scholarship, not Navy. You are correct, however, in that students still need to check the admission guidance for the schools they're applying for to see what the standardized test requirement is/ will be for this upcoming admission cycle. As we tell applicants all the time, being offered the scholarship does not mean you are guaranteed admission to the school. That comes separately.

Yes, if you can. Again, the minimum application requirements for MO scholarship are 1000 SAT, 22 ACT, or 74 ASVAB. You can also check the link below and validate it.

Keep in mind that meeting the minimums for NROTC MO are probably not going to be competitive for a scholarship unless you're very outstanding in other areas. YMMV

My son got an e-mail from his coordinator that told him to hold off on submitting his MO scholarship application because Marine command was still trying to figure out what they were gong to do in absence of the ACT/SAT. No mention of taking the ASVB in the email as an option

I'm pretty sure the ASVAB has always been an option and it certainly can't hurt.

Currently, there is no plan to waive the testing requirement of either the SAT/ACT/ASVAB minimum score. However, you are correct that the discussion is being had. Again, my only point is that you may take the ASVAB as a qualifying test in place of the SAT or ACT.
