So I recently got a nomination from Senator Al Franken to USAFA and I just got a postcard from the Academy saying that I am "now an official candidate". But before on my online application I was already a "candidate" a long time ago so my question is - is being "an official candidate" different from being just a "candidate" and what exactly is the difference if there is one?

No difference, they probably had everything processed along time ago, they've just finally gotten around to sending the postcard.

Your candidate status should have had an as-trick by it. Down at the bottom of that box, something to the effect of this should be written:

"You are a candidate if you are either deemed competitive by the Academy for you have received your nomination. NOTE: You can receive a nomination and still not be deemed competitive."

So, if I understand your post correctly, you were already competitive to the Academy, but now you are considered "official" for appointment.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

Andrew
