Just a heads up- when your mid reaches the summer before their firstie year, they are asked what their blood type is on one of the forms they fill out for Leatherneck. That the mid is filling out at 5 a.m. East Coast time on their way to Leatherneck. And you, as a parent, have no clue what their blood type is because AFAYK, it isn't recorded on an immunization form or other record and you have no memory of ever asking the pediatrician that question when your mid was younger....

My DS knows his blood type, because he had to put it on his kill card for the MARSOC screener. :D

Our son’s birth certificate lists his blood type. We keep all of our medical/health records in a handy place. Each of us knows our respective blood type. Just curious how many here don’t know their blood type. That seems pretty basic knowledge to me, but perhaps it isn’t. Also, if you donate, you know.

They don't know their type before senior year? They have not received a lot of medicals including blood typing? It will be on their Dog Tags if they still use them. As O-Neg was always on call list for donor any time any where.

I am 57 years old and have no idea what my blood type is. My son found his blood type out after getting his AF pilots physical prior to graduating college and commissioning through AFRotc.

My DS had to get his blood typed for DoDMERB exam for acceptance to SA. Is that not a standard thing?

I've learned that you only find out your blood type if you're very ill or donating blood products/organ(s). I was shocked when I asked DS's pediatrician and they don't have any record of it. It seems like it would be done when they are born.

It's not basic knowledge, but it should be. We're from Michigan and it isn't required on birth certificates. Donating is the easiest way to find out because physicians need a reason to order the test.

Dredging up this older thread - got a text from my plebe last night wanting to know his blood type for a MARSOT screener tomorrow (Saturday). I dug into his medical records (we have all of them when he prepared for his DoDMERB) and while he has had tons of blood work over the years for ear infections, etc., nowhere could I find anything about blood type. Guess he never had his blood typed (I give blood regularly so I know mine). Seems strange to not have that basic info. I told him he should see if he can get his blood typed at the medical facility in Bancroft. They would do that, wouldn't they?

Also, what exactly is the MARSOT screener for? He said it was going to be a "14-hour beat-down". I did a bit of searching and seems that the screener is for Leatherneck so I'm wondering why a 4/C would be doing this. We get soooooo little info from our DS ("I'm beyond busy, can't talk or write now"). His interest in Marines is new to me.

Our DS happens to know his (O Neg) since the American Red Cross provides it on your donor card. He donated last year as soon as he was 16. And, it is free, well, minus trading your blood to get the type!

OK...don't Midshipmen get Dog Tags anymore ? If so...Blood Type is hanging around their neck ! (I would also expect it to be included on those new fangled ID cards they get issued).

Nope. No dog tags, and the CAC only shows Service, Status, Pay Grade, and Rank on the front.
The back of the CAC shows DoB and Geneva Category.

Has blood type been removed from the back of the CAC card?

I had one of the early versions, and it was one the back, upper left corner, tiny print. My Retired ID is the old-style non-CAC.

Not on my CAC. I would imagine this was removed due to possibility of inaccuracies.

Better to give universal blood while awaiting type & screen than to accidentally give wrong blood based on a paperwork/CAC error. Anywhere that has blood banking capability storing more than O neg blood is going to have blood typing capability. Those areas so far forward as to not have lab ability will likely only be stocked with O neg blood. (Just my guess here, I have no current, direct knowledge of the blood banking process in the field)
