Your Son/Daughter is Going Where?? Round 2

(USNA) Tell them you are heading to the #1 ranked public school, where the speed of light was measured.

I find this to be kinda odd, a lot of people (myself included) think that UMich or UCLA or UC Berkeley is America's top public school, they're even ranked so by U.S. News and World Report.

Or...you could do like I do now...just adjust for your DS/DD....

My answer to "Oh, you were in the military? Uh, well...did you go to college?"

<<Bow head a touch, look down, slightly mumble>>

"Uh, well...I didn't go to college on campus, but I was in a federal institution and after four years I earned a bachelors degree! It changed my life!"

And then reach for the popcorn and soda...

***Oh, side note...I did learn that this is NOT the best touch of humor with a new students parents on parent-teacher night...
Evil, just evil.

You have to look at the various criteria used by U.S. News, as well as the filters.

On the latest, it’s USNA, USAFA and USMA. 1-2-3. Note they are grouped in liberal arts, as well as national (vice regional). They are also colleges, not universities.

And here are more USNA rankings in this screenshot from 2024 report. All depends on how you slice the cake. I take all of these rankings by various entities with multiple grains of salt.

If I recall correctly, U.S. News puts the SAs as Top Public Colleges without graduate programs. UCLA, UMich, and ect all have grad programs. I might be wrong though!

I’ve posted this before, but one of my mother’s friends, on learning I was headed to Navy OCS after university rather than taking the grad school fellowship I had gotten, expressed her concern I would ruin my hands handling all those rough ropes on boats. (!) She added a very expensive hand cream to my small suitcase. It was nice but heavily fragranced. I used it as a foot cream on my poor feet that had to break in new stiff leather low quarters, boots, etc. What I didn’t realize was the heat of my feet would waft that fragrance upward, eliciting “comments” from the senior OCs tasked with indoctrinating us. Stinky feet of a different kind.

Most got it, but a few folks from our church seemed to think that like the Pell grant, an ROTC scholarship was awarded based on severe financial need, or like to Michael J Fox in front of a judge in Doc Hollywood, it was a do this, else go to prison ultimatum or something for breaking the law.

"Did you hide your money in a mattress or something?" I should have corrected them I suppose, but had too much fun with quip responses like "Yes, mostly in a numbered account in the Caymans". I thought I was being pretty clever until my wife sternly reminded me that the church, which is brilliant in the number of times they ask for money each year for so many reasons, is going to start asking for even more money if I didn't knock it off.

Fully agree on this one! Every time I hear myself explain it to someone I think 'wow - still sounds weird to me!'
Facts! I don’t even try anymore because it’s hard to do it in less than a few sentences & I’ve lost them at that point 😂.
