Your thoughts please

DS indicates that his AFROTC and Army ROTC applications are fully complete. He claims all materials needed are submitted and that the portals reflect this. He is solely responsible for the application processes (mom and I stayed out). To date he has not been contacted for an interview. We have not provided any guidance to him, so far. He has LOA's from two academies, thus appears to meet the typical requirements for consideration.

May I have your thoughts please on how we might offer him advice on what to do, who to contact, how to gain some traction with ROTC? Thank you and good look to your sons and daughters wherever they may be in the process.

It’s getting late in the game, he needs to be proactive to get the required interviews done or he may miss opportunities. This is his career and it’s important to learn how to advocate professionally. He doesn’t want to miss any other boards, be proactive and get after it.

How near or far away would his desired college be in terms of AFROTC or AROTC? Close enough to visit and stop by the cadre office to ask some questions?

Harder question perhaps, if he is "waiting" for someone to handle his interview, is he signaling to you that the academies are what he really wants?

If I know it is important to him, I’d be helping with reminders and guidance on communicating effectively, etc. to keep the ball rolling. I know it may be an unpopular opinion amongst some on this forum, but I don’t think “zero” involvement during the college and scholarship application process is right for all (most). There is a difference between helicoptering and total enablement vs. continuing to do our parent job of teaching them (often side by side) how to be adults. My 2 cents.

We all want our kids to be independent, but this isn't like studying for an AP test where the difference between a 2 or a 4 is just having to take one extra class in college. This ROTC scholarship process is worth up to $200,000. Besides choosing a spouse and buying a house, this is the biggest decision of his or her life.

My DS was not contacted to do his AROTC interview. He contacted the ROO at his #1 school and made an appointment for the interview. I would suggest your DS contact the ROO at his #1 and ask to be scheduled for the AROTC interview. Some will do it by zoom. Not sure about AFROTC. Good luck. Last AROTC board meets again in March so I wouldn't wait much longer.

Sometimes, AFROTC uses the USAFA ALO interview. BUT, your DS should reach out to both programs immediately to set up interviews or confirm in the case of AFROTC that none is necessary because the ALO interview is being written up for AFROTC. Good luck. Not the time for you to stay too hands off. It sounds like your DS needs a gentle shove in the right direction.

Does he have noms for the SAs he has LOAs for? Is fully checked off on all other SA requirements?

I have attached a screen shot of the PSU AROTC self-schedule an interview web page. I believe that ball is in his court. Usually we see posts on here from applicants who are working hard to get scheduled and run into roadblocks, or asking if it’s okay to interview at a closer school rather than drive 5 hours to their #1.

My DS has the same issue. Luckily he has scheduled a NROTC interview on Feb 9th, do you guys think if he can beat the next NROTC board date on Feb 20th?

The February boards already have their spots filled with applications so it would go in front of one of the March boards.

Also, if a Lieutenant is doing his interview, he may want to casually mention that 15 February is the cut off for all documentation. It's getting close.

Both of my applicants reached out to schedule their own interviews back in the day. They weren’t contacted.

Reach out and get them done.

Thank you for your comments. Yes, he could visit. It appears he was waiting to be asked to interview vs. understanding that he needed to initiate the contact. Much appreciated.

Thank you for your comments. And thank you for your active participation on this site. Your input is invaluable.

To your question, yes, all is good with the Service academy process, other than a medical waiver which has been requested by both.
