Yes, the major is looked at TWA.
Contact the det and inform them of this decision. I would do it now in the spring, and in person.
There is a reason why. Some dets are huge with 200-300 cadets. This informs them now, not in mid-Sept when they ask for the ROTC nom. They will write a rec for that nom, in large dets, CC's rarely can place a name with a face 2 weeks in. Your child needs that connection. Hard to write a great rec if they are blind sided in mid-Sept and it is due by Oct 1.
If you contact them now, they will be aware of your child, and will be able to give a stronger rec. Double edge sword here, make sure they shine. That means batting their PFA out of the ball park, a 88 PFA will not due, 97+ is where you want them to be. Use the summer to train.
Additionally the reason why to inform them now, is that the CC also will be looking at C200 and 300's for SFT and AFSC. It is not as if once you get there you never meet another ROTC board. You do! You meet it as a C200 for SFT. You meet it as a 300 for AFSC. The CC also may have cadets trying for IS scholarships, that also require recs. This is on top of selecting cadets for jobs within the det., and semester reviews/counseling which is a part of their file for the SFT and AFSC.
As you can see, even if your DS was the only cadet asking for an ROTC nom to the AFA, they have many, many more recs to write regarding other cadets. Everyone of those cadets get signed off by a commander. The commander also meets with the POC Cadet Commander in the review process. Start the multiplication process of 200, and you can see it is A LOT of paperwork for a Commander.
Again, the CC will appreciate knowing that he will be needing him for support come next yr now, compared to mid-Sept.
