March 8th, 2011 AROTC Board

good morning Ohio... Hey.... checked status this am and "my kid has been selected for an interview"!!! AWESOME... IM back with lots of thin mints to get me thru the day... I called CC this AM and was told that the offers could go out as late as Tuesday next week. I guess thats good. 4 people input the offers and it is broken down by alphabet.. so there ya go... every little bit of info helps. If nothing comes today, don't give up hope quite yet.

Ft. Knox is in Eastern Time Zone, right? I find it odd that there have been no additional status changes for anyone on this forum, and it's 10:20 in the morning...

We are also in MD; DS' 1st choice school is Univ of South Carolina, so if all of the stars line up right they could be in the same battalion if your DS attends Coastal. BUT, my guess is that IF my DS is awarded a scholarship, it will be to either Univ of MD or Loyola.

My DS did his AROTC interview at Univ of South Carolina because we live in the area. However - he is going to Clemson. I don't think he wanted to be that close to home. Plus if you know anything about college football a Tigers fan wouldn't want to go to USC.
Anyway - my DS did enjoy his interview and had nice things to say about the person he met with.

Good Luck to everyone!

Well based on Kev Dawg's Pop's post, now we gotta ask. For those of you who have received offers, where is your last name in the alphabet??

Re the alphabet.. So there is no confusion... There are 4 people inputing.... they each have 6 or 7 letters of the alphabet.... I hope the person who inputs the W's was out yesterday! Our last name starts with W. It would be interesting to see of those who got offers what their last name starts with..

Hey! Watch out for the thin mints...you'll be out of stock and have none left for the first year of college(until next March anyway...). We've never confirmed the whole alphabet thing, it hasn't proven a true pattern in ANY previous board. Hope those 4 people are in a good mood and productive today!

Myers-Briggs

Thanks for the distractions!
INTJ son here (I think that's what he came out as).

Eagerly hoping that the DoDMERB letter this week wasn't just a tease. Eye appt today, physical monday.

Here's the problem: He listed 2 privates (one Ivy top choice), two state schools and one OOS school. He is accepted to all but waitlisted to one private. Got into the Ivy!!!! Yikes. Totally his first choice. We are hoping for the scholarship. He met with the ROTC dept at the Ivy and really loved it. Doesn't like one of the state schools, crossed it off after visit this week.

Luckily we have a weekend visit to the other top choice--in state school. It should distract us and hopefully we can come back to a good result?!

Options will be slim for switching from in-state to Ivy. So fingers, toes, arms, legs crossed for perfect outcome (slim chance, right). But we are optimistic, since it was a slim chance for him to get accepted to an Ivy, so we want to continue the magic!!!

Here's hoping that this final board is more rewarding that the second board for all of you who wait with us. It's 5 o'clock somewhere and so the wine may start flowing earlier today!

That was my next question. I'm at work and shouldn't be checking this but oh well!

okay ladies, what is the code? We need a distraction - since it doesn't appear results are posting so far today:mad:

Looks at personality through 4 spectra:
Introversion-Extroversion Scale
Sensing-Intuition Scale
Thinking-Feeling Scale
Judging-Perceiving Scale

INFJ = Introverted, Intuitive, Feeling, Judging

Google Myers Briggs and you will find a test. Quite frankly when we took this test and did some reading about the results it changed our lives. Made so much more of the world make sense.

It comes from something called Myers Briggs. Here's the link to the Wikipedia description - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myers-Briggs_Type_Indicator

Basically it consists of a series of questions that show personality preferences.

Okay, it sounded familar, will go take the test for a distraction....gonna need it today! Thanks!

oh Dear Lord!!! My DS's last name starts with W. Does this mean we will have to potentially wait until Tuesday? Ay yi yi. Here's hopin you'll share those thin mints with me!!

It may just stay 5 o'clock in Ohioland until Tuesday!! Keep the faith, somewhere Pantentesq or another poster had info leaning toward Ivy placements:smile: It ain't over and all of that good stuff...

Do we know anything about college football??!!? My home will be VERY LOUD every Thanksgiving weekend as my DD just graduated from CLEMSON!! When DS started looking into SC she had fits...Don't really know how it ended up that both kids are going to school in South Carolina since we live in Maryland, especially since we have no family there, etc...BUT since both were awarded in-state tuition rates for academics, it's all good. :thumb: PS - LOVE that peach ice cream at Clemson!

Did you ask the Ivy if they "talk" with ROTC?

Sometimes ROTC "talks" with admissions. If so, you may find the magic continuing. In other words, ROTC may have used their magic and assisted in getting accepted by saying, you accept him, and we have a scholarship.

It is what I call push/pull. ROTC pushes, school pulls them in.

I know at least for AFROTC this is true. DS never even applied to UNCCH, but they accepted him. We found out it was because he had an AFROTC scholarship, and ROTC contacted admissions saying we want this kid, here's his info. UNCCH agreed he met their parameters, and sent a letter saying, we know you didn't apply and it is past the deadline, BUT we would like to offer you admission to our college, just sign the attached form and remit it. Welcome to the class of 2012.

It happens. He also got the same from NYU Sterns.

OBTW my only problem I would have with USC is their mascots name. I have a thing with mascots, and IMPO both my kids have stupid ones. One has a turtle, I mean seriously who is afraid of a turtle? The other has a castrated bird. The only people afraid of the bird is the darn turtle! I have 1 last child I am pinning hopes on that they will go to a school where the mascot makes you believe in it as powerful. Afterall, I am pretty sure there is nothing left that is less threatening than a turtle or a bird. Yes, we love the schools, just think it is funny that these ACC teams have weak mascots.

We have a split family too! My oldest DS graduated from USC - he loves his Gamecocks! My middle DS is a senior at Clemson and will graduate next month! Now the youngest is going to Clemson on an AROTC scholarship. I can already see him doing the push-ups on the field during football games with his ROTC buddies!

We have talked to them, but they haven't promised anything. He has shown great interest, and told the school from day one it was his top choice, so we hope that helped.

I was wondering how this board works concerning admissions. Since they are posting after all school decisions are out, will everyone be offered a school they are admitted to, or do they still go from the list provided before acceptances were in? Seems crazy that they would offer someone a school they weren't accepted to, but then again I don't know the timeline of all the decision making. Board met in March before acceptances were in.

Anyone with intel on this?

To Tie this together

Okay, it sounded familar, will go take the test for a distraction....gonna need it today! Thanks!

If you are a strong "J" on the Myers Briggs test you would probably take your list and work it top to bottom when inputting the data for the scholarships. If you are are strong "P" you might find that too constraining and start with the last page or the bottom of the page or a letter in the middle.

So you see this really isn't off topic at all

VA

Yes, they offer scholarships to candidates that find out they weren't admitted. It happens every yr.

That is why I asked if this school does the push/pull when you stated it was a reach.

Yes, we are AF, but I have to say I have never understood the AROTC/NROTC system where the school is tied to the candidate. It just seems like extra work for the personnel who are in charge of scholarships. Mainly because every yr there are candidates that want to ask for the scholarship to be changed to a different school, for reasons like got into the school, but not the scholarship, got the scholarship, but not the school.

AFROTC makes you state your picks, but the scholarship is tied to the cadet, and not the school. The only req is that the school accept the scholarship. This is also why UNCCH and NYU were able to offer admission without our DS ever applying.

My only assumption is that they want to spread the wealth across the country in an equitable manner concerning each BN, whereas, the AFROTC system takes an approach of it is spread across the country, but not necessarily equally to each det.

The board uses the list before acceptances went out. If you get an offer to a school tlhat you are not accepted to, then you go into "trnasfer mode" and start that process.

Is this something that ROTC does automatically? Or is this something that you have to request that they do.
