Just thought I'd update everyone on the status of campus-based scholarships, at least at DS's school. If you recall, for reasons only known to him, my son did not apply for a 4-year scholarship in high school, despite pretty good stats (3.9 GPA / 34 ACT). He then decided firmly in the spring that he wants to do ROTC.
His intention was to show up and compete for a campus-based scholarship - the cadre had him fill out all his paperwork and go through the Dodmerb process last spring. He is medically qualified.
He went to ROTC orientation the week before school started and apparently made a good showing, and then scored 283 on his first PT test last week.
He was informed today that he is being given a 4-yr scholarship effective this semester, and will be contracting within the week. I believe it is a scholarship that went unused at his battalion - i.e. someone didn't show up, but I'm not 100% certain. I do not know if other non-scholarship cadets in his battalion received anything.
So, for what it's worth, his story has a happy ending. Or, more correctly, a happy beginning! I hope other cadets who are waiting to hear get similar good news.
