Army ROTC 2023-2024 1st Board

When will they be upgraded? So if I receive a 3 year on the second board when could it potentially be upgraded?
Based on what I've seen, if you get a 3-year in the second board, you MIGHT get upgraded to a 4-year after the third board.

I've also seen posts from people who after getting a 3-year offer, heard from someone (probably a ROO at one of their chosen schools) who said, "Hey, you could get upgraded if you XXXX." So, it could be improving your PFA, or submitting a higher SAT/ACT score, etc. I mean, once you are boarded, those are probably really the only ways to get any extra points, because you can't reinterview, and your GPA is not going to be recalculated.

What are your stats? Do you feel as though you have a strong application?
3.84 UW GPA, multiple AP courses
21 ACT, this is what I view to be my weakest link, though I plan on taking it again before board 2 meets
Various honors awards for grades
3-year varsity track and field/letter winner
Marching band letter winner/section leader
NHS
Civil Air Patrol officer/squadron cadet commander
Several regional and national Civil Air Patrol awards
Ohio Buckeye Boys State delegate
100+ hours of volunteer service
According to the PMS that did my interview I did an outstanding job, it lasted about an hour

In all, I feel that I have a decent application, maybe not the strongest but certainly not that bad, in my opinion.

All I know is what I've read from posts on this forum. A lot of them get upgraded on the 3rd board. I have read that about 3,000 scholarships are awarded. 1/3 are four year and the rest are 2 and 3 year. They likely only gave out 300 on the first board, so there are probably around 700 more 4 year scholarships available.

Thanks for this. I agree you have a good, solid application. Your stats are very similar to my DS. He has a 3.85 GPA, multiple AP coursses, NHS, two-sport varsity (soccer and track), soccer team co-captain, vice president of his class, president of multiple other school clubs, various other honor societies, etc.

We decided to wait until the January board because we heard how insanely competitive the October board is. He also got a 21 on his first ACT. He is re-taking tomorrow and probably taking for a third time in December so he can submit his highest/best scores to the January board.

I'm just a parent and have no prior experience, but I do A LOT of research and I'd say you have a good chance of getting at least a 3-year AD scholarship on the second or third board. Don't lose hope, and submit higher test scores if you are able. Good luck!

Yes, I'd say that's correct based on what I've read. Also keep in mind that what happens with a lot of these 4-year offers made this week is that many of these kids are going to ultimately end up at a SA. Remember, these offers made this week are to the best and brightest. You see all the Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Notre Dame, etc.

So, what I think happens is all these kids are going to accept their offers, but a few months down the road if they get into West Point or Annapolis, they are going to end up giving them back, and those scholarships probably end of being "recycled" in the second and third boards.

If you think about it, the way ROTC puts its "class" of roughly 3,000 cadets together each year is not much different than the way an individual college fills its freshman class. It's a constant counting, sifting and re-sorting until you ultimately end up with the group you'll move forward with.

Have you tried taking SAT? Some people do better on ACT, some do better on SAT.

I was told at my interview that I had the max points for sat and gpa, 1500 and 3.98/4.0 so I probably can’t get any extra points there. Is there any other way to get upgraded?

If you haven't maxed out your PFA, train for it and resubmit with better results before the January board. Other than that, I don't think there's much you can do, because your academic stuff is already set. And whatever your leadership stuff is at this point isn't going to change. It's not like you can go out now and run for class president or anything.

My son actually did considerably worse on the SAT than the ACT. Although his ACT score wasn't great, he did say he liked the format of that test better. And, knowing he did better on one vs. the other gave him a direction to focus on for future attempts. That alone is a good reason to take both, because you can then focus on the test you prefer and train specifically for that for future attempts.

It’s near max I think like 96/100, is it worth resubmitting?

4.0/4.0 GPA, 13 APs (score 3-5), 1570 SAT, weak in sports, will I still have chance next board? Also, if I can improve PFA, shall I re-submit?

With those numbers, you are literally off the charts academically!

It will all come down to your athletic and leadership categories. If you do not have good qualifications there, it will be difficult to manufacture much for your resume at this point.

Congrats to all of you getting your good news on scholarships! I am curious if any of the 4 year AROTC winners that are discussing scholarships above are non-technical majors? We are always hearing that you won't get a scholarship unless you are a technical major. Please let me know if you are a non-technical major and received a scholarship.

I don't think Army cares about what you're majoring in

My DS is a non-technical major and received the 4-year.
