What do most cadets carry their personal items in for r-day? would a backpack be better? I have read to have items packed in zip lock bags for quick transition to issued duffel bag. What is best?

My ds recieved a 4 yr Rotc schlarship. The paperwork states that he must sign and return by Mar 18. We are waiting for word on an appointment that may or may not come in before Mar 18. Anybody else have this situation? Not sure what he should do. Thanks
