Hello,

I just ended my freshman year of college and am starting college at a new university that has NROTC this fall. I am a Marine Option/ College Programmer. Any advice on how I may get the 2 year scholarship and/or Advanced Standing so I can remain apart of the unit come junior year?

Thanks!

-Get a high (285+) PFT score
-Get good grades (3.0+)
-Demostrate leadership potential
-Be active in the unit
-Don't mess up in a major way (DUI, Minor in Possession, etc)
-Be early to events and volunteer when they ask for volunteers
-Seek help when you need it/give help when you can
-Be confident without being arrogant
-Be ready to learn and take advantage of every opportunity presented
-Pray

Echo all of the above.

Also, look into the Platoon Leader's Class as an alternate route as a backup.
You can still take Naval Science courses if you don't get advanced standing -- and still maintain those ties with the unit.

Best wishes

Do you know how many other college programmers you will be competing against at you unit? The officers there send a list in and rank their MIDN when they help them put together their package. It is definitely doable. My DS joined his unit after his freshman year. He switched over from AFROTC. After one year of proving himself, he was awarded the two year scholarship. The sideload can be harder to get than the 4year because there are fewer available and the have several months to evaluate you. Make the most of that time and do your best. If you are a good MIDN, they will go out of their way to help you put together a good package when you apply for that scholarship.

Agree with all the advice given.

Would just add that you need to do well in school also.
