2024 Job Drops?

My son says he got it from the Aero Department. Guess they are proud to see that 84 percent of their seniors got what they wanted when requesting UPT.

The chart you posted is titled "Percent of Graduates going to Pilot Training (Class of 2024)" It doesn't imply pilot job requested. Right? I mean it is self selection. Most Aero majors would just select Pilot as their requested job. It doesn't indicate the percentage of Aero majors not selected for the Pilot job who made it their preference.

Likewise, political science had 29% of their cadets selected to go onto Pilot training. Maybe that was 100% of political science majors who selected Pilot as their job preference.

Can anyone help clarify or verify what I heard from my DS?
I understand from my C2C at USAFA that there is a new wrinkle (in the last year or two) in the way jobs are selected. He explained that class rank 1-100 gets jobs first, then 300-400, followed by 600-700, and then 101-299, 401-599, 701-until complete. Basically it spreads the wealth among the less popular jobs.
If this is the case the Astro major ranked 101 is no better off than the MSS major ranked 700…
This was a rumor made up by cadets who were unaware of how it was done.

I think everyone or almost everyone who wanted a UPT Slot got it this year, but I do not have that answer yet. Lots of Aero Majors want to do grad school as they wait for the UPT slot to become available. Wait is over a year and about 30 plus Aero Majors get grad school slots.

No idea, but a private license is of zero use. I say that with 3000+ IP hours teaching UPT. One of my worst students was a MEI, regional Captain.

Any idea what percentage of UPT students report having never taken a flight lesson?
Mine and his friends have never flown. He said it didn’t matter. Mine had just done gliders for summer training.

My cadet did not have specific details like the above ranking lists, but has told me for several years that USAFA in fact does spread the rankings out to all career choices so that they will have the smartest achievers in every job category.

I’m not sure about the ranking category numbers you have listed, but I can confirm that my cadet has told us for several years that’s how they do it in order to have the brightest in every field. I’m sure it’s not in stone for everyone. Mine is a 2024 grad.

My cadet personally knows a few who did not get pilot and were devastated.

All of the 65 24ers who are on the waitlist for a pilot slot (put in for pilot but got something else) will either be given their pilot slot (~15 cadets) and the rest will do their assigned jobs for 2 years and then will PCS to pilot training. From General Clark himself

The job drop process is not totally static from year to year. For one, the "needs of the AF" vacancies across jobs (AFSCs) change. Some years, they need Public Affairs officers, other years they need none. A few years back there was a concern voiced by some career field managers that USAFA's best (smartest/highest ranked grads) were going to the "popular" AFSCs and the least popular AFSCs (generally, missileer) were getting the leasts accomplished grads, and this could cause problems for our nuclear force over time. This led to something called the "Quartile" system where by some grads from each quartile were awarded certain AFSCs they might not otherwise pick. As you can imagine, this was VERY devastating to some hard working cadets who excelled for 3.5 years expecting to reap the benefits of their hard work by earning one of the few and most sought after AFSCs, or at least feeling confident there was no chance they would get an undesirable AFSC. I understand the needs of the AF, but it was really something to change the rules of the game so suddenly. I believe the quartile system is now in place in some way every year.
