...And Europe descended into 4 years of the most brutal warfare ever experienced. LTCol John McCrae - a Surgeon in the Canadian Army wrote the famous poem below after the 2d Battle of Ypres in 1915- the battle in which Poison gas was first introduced. 70,000 Allied soldiers and over 35,000 German soldiers were killed in that battle.

Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
