I've seen somewhere before talk about contracting halfway through freshman year and getting a 3.5 year arotc scholarship? Am I going crazy and mixing up afrotc with arotc threads, or does this actually exist? If so, how does one do that? I tried searching for more info, but 3.5 isn't a searchable term.

At my school there were quite a few 3 Year AD scholarships that were upgraded to 3.5 year.

Our son entered a SMC with no AFROTC Scholarship. Second semester of this first year, he was notified on February 14 that he had been selected for a 3.5 year scholarship which includes tuition, all fees and $900 annually for books plus a monthly stipend. He contracted at a ceremony on campus in April (2 months later) and we received a refumd for the tuition/fees/books for the 2nd semester (as we had already paid those). I hope that helps answer some of your questions. :) While room and board is the only thing not covered by this scholarship, the university does a good job of looking for opportunities to make up the differences with awards and grants.

My DS was notified in December that his scholarship was being upgraded to a 3.5 year. He finalized his paperwork in January and his tuition was paid immediately. He also received his book allowance and is getting a monthly stipend. I believe he said all of the 3yr AD's (or at least all who were doing well with ROTC) at his school were upgraded.

Don't count on it...have a plan to pay for the first year if you received a 3AD. It happens, but not every year and not every time, and it's up to your Battalion if you warrant an upgrade or not. Remember also that the only way to contract before sophomore year is if you have a scholarship. The only way to contract before Junior year is if you have a scholarship or are SMP.

To be clear, our son is now a sophomore so this happend LAST year, February 14 2012 when he was a second-semester freshman. At his Det there were 11 other AFROTC cadets who were awarded a 3.5 year last February as well. Did not mean to give the impression that this happened this year.

My son is a freshman this year. He was just awarded a 3.5 yr AFROTC scholarship on 3/25/13. He signed paperwork and took his oath on 3/28/13. They quickly paid his Spring 13 tuition, as we just received a refund from the college yesterday. We are thrilled!!!

    DPod-
Congratulations on your 3-year AD to St. Johns University. If this is the SJU in Minnesota, don't forget that the university offers free room & board to ROTC scholarship recepients (you probably already know this though).

My son checked out SJU and the Fighting Saints Battalion. Very impressed. Has chosen to attend St. Cloud State University, so you will definitely see him at the Battalion. Major Nelson was great to work with.

    Best of luck to you!

Thanks! Haha, I forgot how many St. John's there were! I'll be attending SJU in NY, majoring in Homeland and Corporate Security w/ a minor in Arabic. Congrats to your son and best of luck to him as well!!!!
